Long-time Husson University women’s basketball coach Kissy Walker ‘03G was the fifth women’s sport head coach to be inducted into the Husson University Sports Hall of Fame when she was enshrined on September 28, 2007, as part of homecoming activities.
The 2023-2024 season marked the 33rd year of Husson University women’s basketball under the guidance of Kissy Walker, who also serves as Husson’s coordinator of athletic contracts.
Since taking over the women’s basketball program at Husson, Walker has the led the Eagles/Braves to a 588-297 record and 12 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics/National Collegiate Athletics Association Division III National Tournament appearances. She has also won 12 conference championships, one NAIA district 5 title and 15 regular season crowns, including the 2021-2022 North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship, the program’s sixth title of any kind in a seven-year span.
Walker has raised the bar in the NAC by racking up the second most wins (352) in the conference since the 2003-2004 season. Heading into the 2024-2025 season, Walker was 12th in the nation in career victories among active Division III coaches and was in the top-75 among active Division III coaches in career winning percentage at .664.
In conference play, Walker’s resume ranks second to none. She has amassed a career record of 361-80 against Western Maine Athletic, Maine Athletic and North Atlantic opponents and has won more than 81 percent of her league games, including reeling off 29 consecutive conference victories from 2009-2011. In 2003-2004 and again in 2015-2016, her teams set a program single-season record with 17 conference wins.
Under Walker Husson has reached the 20-victory plateau 11 different occasions and posted 23 or more wins six times, including the 1992-1993 team which posted a single-season record 28 wins - at the time of her induction. She has also guided the program to three national tournament wins with two of those victories coming during the 1992-1993 team’s run to the NAIA division ii national semifinals.
Additionally, her teams have been ranked in the top-25 six times, reaching as high as the fourth ranked team in the nation during the 1992-1993 season.
The winningest coach in program history and the longest tenured head coach for a single sport in Husson University Athletics' history - at the time of her induction - has been named conference coach of the year 11 times, Maine State coach of the year three times, NAIA district 5 coach of the year twice, New England Women's Basketball Association Coach of the Year once and Eastern College Athletic Conference All-New England Coach of the Year once.
A total of 20 of Walker’s former players and one team have already been inducted into the Husson University Sports Hall of Fame.
Before her record-setting head coaching career began in 1989-1990, Walker served as an assistant on the Husson women’s basketball staff for the 1988-1989 season and was the first assistant coach in Husson University field hockey program history from 1997-1998.
A 1986 graduate of the University of Maine Orono, Walker earned a bachelor of science in health and physical education and a masters degree in business administration from Husson in 2003. Additionally, Walker was a four-year letter winner and captain for the women’s basketball team at the University of Maine from 1983-86.
A native of Santa Anna, California, Walker resides in Bangor, Maine with her son.
