One of the finest infielders to ever don the Husson University baseball uniform, Don Sawyer ‘01 played shortstop for hall of fame member John "JK" Kolasinski '85 from 1997-1999, 2001, earning four Maine Athletic Conference All-Conference Selections.
Sawyer hit .395 (217-550) with 157 runs, 38 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 111 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 157 career games played. Additionally, he showcased great plate discipline, recording 49 career walks and 45 strikeouts, while posting a .547 on-base percentage, a .516 slugging percentage and a stolen base percentage of .813.
At the time of his induction, Sawyer ranked among the program's top-10 career leaders in games played (eighth), at bats (550, seventh), runs (fourth), hits (217, fourth), doubles (third), RBI (seventh), times hit by pitch (18, tied for third), total bases (284, fourth) and batting average (eighth). He also held the program’s single-season record for doubles with 20 in 1999.
As a junior, Sawyer posted his best season in a Husson uniform with a .436 batting average, 65 hits, 45 runs, 20 doubles, a triple, 28 RBI, seven stolen bases, a .584 slugging percentage and a .482 on-base percentage.
Following the season, Sawyer was named MAC player of the year while earning National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-Northeast Regional Team accolades and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors.
Additionally, Sawyer was the fifth student-athlete in program history since 1955 to hit .400 or higher in multiple seasons after he hit .429 during his senior campaign.
The 1997 MAC rookie of the year was also selected to the NAIA all-district 5 squads in 1997 and 1998.
The senior captain helped the Braves win 85 games and two MAC championships in 1997 and 1998 during his time at Husson.
A native of Brewer, Maine, Sawyer attended Brewer High School.
