Led by hall of fame member Bruce MacGregor and assisted by hall of fame member Keith Mahoney, the 1970 men's basketball team posted the program's first 20 win season in 31 years with a program-record at the time 22-3 mark and became the first team in program history to qualify for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 32 Playoffs.

The team started the season with a 115-47 victory over Thomas College in the very first game played in the newly open William P. Newman Gymnasium, but suffered a heartbreaking loss to Nasson College, 89-87 in the opening round of the fifth annual Paul Bunyan tournament. That disappointing loss proved to be the turning point, as the Braves reeled off 17-straight wins - the second longest winning streak in program history at the time - before Southern New Hampshire University (formerly New Hampshire College) ended the streak with a 105-103 victory on their home court. The Braves went 4-1 rest of the season, with the only loss coming vs. Western New England University (formerly Western New England College) in the semifinal round of the NAIA district 32 playoffs. The last victory of season was a 136-103 home victory over Sacred Heart University, allowing the 1970 team to break the single-season win mark of 21 that was set by the 1939-1940 team.

During the 17-game winning streak the Braves pick-up home wins over University of New Haven (formerly New Haven College) University of Maine at Portland, New Jersey City University (formerly Jersey City State College), University of Maine at Farmington (formerly Farmington State College), Nasson, Berkshire-Christian College, Eastern Nazarene College and Ricker College. They also earned road wins over Curry College, Western Connecticut State University (formerly Western Connecticut State College), a three overtime thriller over the University of New Haven, Western New England, Eastern Nazarene, University of New England (formerly St. Francis College), Ricker, Salem State University (formerly Salem State College) and the University of Maine at Portland.

The team featured five Husson University Sports Hall of Fame members in: Dick Giroux '70, who averaged a double-double with 19.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game; Al Caston '70 who averaged a double-double with 17.1 points and 14.0 rebounds per contest; Donnie Meyers '71, who nearly average a double-double with 14.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game; John Sinclair '70 who pitched in with 11.6 points and 6.0 rebounds and Delmar Clark '70 who had 4.0 points per game.
