Co-Del Merrill Male Athlete of the Year: Justin Martin - Men's Basketball/Men's Track & Field - Winslow, Maine
Justin Martin not only competed in two varsity sports at Husson, he excelled at both of them. Martin played four seasons of basketball and will compete in his fourth and final season of outdoor track & field in the spring of 2020.
In his final season on the Eagle hardwood, Martin helped Husson to a 17-11 record - including an 11-3 mark in conference play - en route to earning a shared or outright regular season conference title for the fourth-straight season and the 15th time in the last 25 years. As the number two seed in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament, Martin led Husson to their seventh NAC Championship in 11 years and the program's 20th National Tournament appearance.
In the semifinal matchup with #3 SUNY Canton, Martin drained twenty points and dished out two assists. He grabbed six rebounds, three steals, and also put up three blocks in the win (85-74) to become the first Husson men's basketball player to achieve 200 career blocks. Facing a red-hot Thomas team that knocked number one-seeded UMaine-Farmington out of the tournament the night before, Martin continued to lead his team with composure. He scored a game-high 26 points, just barely missing a double-double with nine rebounds. He put up four blocks, stole the ball once, and nailed 6-for-6 free throws as the Eagles pulled away from the Terriers following a tie-game at the half. Martin was selected as the All-Tournament MVP for his performance during the tournament.
The 6-6 center collected his first career First Team All-NAC and First Team All-State honors after averaging 14.8 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks during his final collegiate season. He finished the year ranked first in the conference in rebounding average and rebounds (258), second in blocked shots (49) and blocked shot average, fourth in points (414), fifth in field goals made (147), sixth in field goal percentage (77.8%), tied for sixth in three-pointers made (50) and eighth in scoring average.
The 2017 NAC Defensive Player of the Year also recorded the most double-doubles in a single-season in nine years with 13, while becoming the first player in program history to lead the team in blocked shots in four-straight seasons.
Martin became the 50th HU player to reach the 1,000-point plateau when he made a three-pointer with 11:16 remaining in the first half of the, 72-58, victory at Maine Maritime Academy on February 12th. Earlier in the season, J-Mart surpassed the Eagles' career leader in blocks with his 166th in Husson's, 71-64, win at Lasell College.
The three-time All-Conference player closed out his NCAA career with 1,055 points, 937 rebounds, 122 assists, 87 steals and 207 blocks. He ranks among the program's top 50 career leaders in blocks (1st), blocked shot average (1.9, 3rd), rebounds (6th), games played (109, t-19th), 3-point field goals made (116, 20th), rebounding average (8.6, 21st), steals (36th), 3-point field goal percentage (34.2%, 38th), points (47th), and field goals made (385, 49th).
The senior captain is the program's All-Time NCAA era career leader in defensive rebounds (653), offensive rebounds (284), total rebounds, blocked shots, and blocked shots average and will leave the program as the single-game record holder for blocked shots with nine at #3 Babson on March 3rd, 2017.
Martin earned ECAC All-New England Honorable Mention honors in 2017, while being selected to the MMBCWA All-State Rookie (2016) and All-State Defensive Team (2018), as well.
Off the court, Martin earned All-NAC Academic Team honors in 2017 and 2019.
A two-sport student-athlete, Martin has already established a very impressive career in track & field as an Eagle. In just his first collegiate meet, Martin began breaking HU program records. He launched the javelin 49.75 meters and proceeded to set higher limits throughout his career, setting a new distance of 55.36 meters in the NAC Championship for both a new meet record and a qualification to the 2017 NCAA DIII New England Outdoor Championship, for his first of three trips to New England's.
Once again in his opening meet of the season, sophomore Martin continued to set new standards, throwing the javelin 58.06 meters to earn another ticket to New England's with ease. To finish out his second year in track & field, the javelin powerhouse threw a convincing victorious throw which flew nine meters further than the closest competitor to help the Husson men's squad claim their first NAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship Title in 2018.
Continuing his qualifying trend into his junior season, Martin once again threw the javelin far enough for another adventure to the DIII New England Championship in his first competing meet of the season. He also dabbled in a couple fairly new throwing events throughout the season, peaking at the 2019 NAC Championship with a second-place discus toss of 35.82 meters and a fourth-place shot put heave of 11.79 meters.
Martin will embrace his final season of outdoor track & field with three All-NAC selections including two in javelin and one in discus, one All-New England honor with a seventh-place javelin throw (56.85m) his rookie year, one ECAC DIII North Field Athlete of the Week spotlight, and three mentions on All-Academic Teams.
Academically, Martin enters his fifth year at Husson University as he works towards completing a degree in Psychology.
