Box Score 2 Northfield, VT - The Husson University volleyball team was in Vermont for two matches on Saturday, looking to end a six-match losing skid they've sustained against tough non-conference competition.
In the first match of the day, the Eagles were able to put one in the win column with a great come-from-behind five-set victory against the host Norwich University Cadets (17-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-15, 15-6).
After a slow start against Norwich, Husson was able to put it together in the last four games for the comeback win. Five different Eagles had four or more kills in the victory, with Kristen Atwood (Cumberland, ME) and Alexandra deHertogh (Cumberland, RI) each leading the way with nine apiece.
Kaitlyn Carl (East Machias, ME) and Bailey Cote (Biddeford, ME) each contributed five kills for Husson, while Nia Arranaga (San Jose, CA) put away four kills while delivering a match-high seven service aces.
Kayla Hannon (Salem, NH) passed out 16 assists while picking up eight digs for the Eagles, and Sarah Wilson (Dover, NH) led the defense with 16 digs of her own. Middle hitters deHertogh and Cote were each big at the net, with deHertogh totaling three blocks (two solo, two assists) and Cote compiling three of her own (one solo, four assists).
Norwich received a balanced effort on offense with Alex Palmer, Angie Hershberger, and Corinne Balta all putting away seven kills each. Katherine Crane handed out 29 assists for the Cadets, Kelsey Mancini had six kills and a team-high six aces, and Balta led the defense with 11 digs.
Husson dropped the second match of the day against Bridgewater State in straight sets.
"I was so proud of the girls for coming back against Norwich," Husson coach Jodie Fairbank said after the matches. "Every player that stepped on the court came together and played like a team. We faltered a little against Bridgewater, but overall it was a day of progress for us."
With the split, Husson will bring a 4-12 record into its next match. That will be back at home at the Newman Gymnasium on Tuesday, September 23 against The University of Maine-Machias. Match time is set for 5:30 p.m.
