HARTFORD, Conn. — The Husson University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Trinity College on Saturday afternoon inside Ray Oosting Gymnasium.
The Eagles (0-1) fell by set scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-14, finishing the match with 15 kills, 27 digs, two service aces and seven block assists.
Trinity (2-0) jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the opening set before Husson began to settle into the match. Senior Janna Preskorn recorded the Eagles' first kill to make it 8-4, while sophomore Peyton Hooker added a kill later in the frame.
Husson pulled within 11-7 following Hooker's kill, but Trinity responded with five of the next six points to build a 16-8 advantage. Preskorn recorded two more kills down the stretch, including one that made the score 22-12, before the Bantams closed out the opening set 25-12.
The Eagles put together their strongest stretch of the match early in the second set. After falling behind 4-0, Husson rattled off three-consecutive points before a kill from junior Autumn Peterson pulled the Eagles within 5-4.
Hooker followed with a kill to make it 6-5 before Peterson helped Husson tie the set at six and then gave the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon with another kill for a 7-6 advantage.
The teams continued to trade points, with Peterson recording another kill to pull Husson within 9-8 before Preskorn tied the set at nine. Trinity answered with four-consecutive points to regain control at 13-9 and eventually stretched its advantage to 18-10.
Husson continued to battle, using a Preskorn kill and a pair of Trinity errors to pull within 18-13. Junior Lilly Andreasen later recorded a service ace to make it 23-16, but the Bantams claimed the final two points for a 25-16 victory and a 2-0 match lead.
Trinity opened the third set with four-straight points before Andreasen put Husson on the board with a kill. Hooker later delivered the Eagles' first service ace of the set to cut the deficit to 9-5.
Husson remained within striking distance midway through the frame, as kills from Andreasen and Hooker helped the Eagles pull within 16-10. Hooker added another kill to make it 17-12, but Trinity answered with a four-point run to build a 21-12 advantage.
The Eagles continued to fight late, getting a block from freshman Abby Vose, Peterson and Preskorn to make it 23-14, before the Bantams scored the final two points to take the set 25-14 and complete the sweep.
Preskorn led Husson offensively with five kills while adding four digs and a block assist. Hooker finished with four kills, four digs and a service ace, while Peterson recorded three kills and two block assists. Andreasen added two kills, six digs and an ace.
Freshman Eden Fraser directed the Eagles' offense with a team-high 11 assists to go along with five digs and a block assist, while freshman Kiara Griffin paced Husson defensively with seven digs. Vose contributed two block assists as Husson totaled 3.5 team blocks.
