BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University volleyball team fell to Covenant College in straight sets, 3-0, Thursday evening inside Newman Athletic Gymnasium.
The Scots (4-1) earned the non-conference victory by set scores of 25-10, 25-6 and 25-6, dropping the Eagles to 0-2 on the season.
Husson battled Covenant early in the opening set, answering the Scots point-for-point over the opening stages. Senior Janna Preskorn opened the match with a kill off an assist from freshman Eden Fraser before a Covenant attack error and a block from junior Autumn Peterson and Fraser helped the Eagles pull even at 4-4.
Sophomore Peyton Hooker followed with a kill to keep Husson within one at 6-5, but Covenant began to create separation from there. The Scots put together a six-point run to turn a 6-5 advantage into a 12-5 lead. Preskorn later added her second kill of the frame, while Husson remained within striking distance at 17-8 before Covenant closed out the set, 25-10.
Covenant carried its momentum into the second set, scoring the first 10 points behind a strong stretch from the service line. Husson got on the board following a Covenant attack error before Hooker recorded kills for the Eagles' second and third points of the set. Hooker finished the frame with three kills, while junior Lilly Andreasen added another late in the set, but the Scots took a 2-0 match advantage with a 25-6 victory.
The Scots again jumped ahead in the third, scoring the first four points before Husson answered with back-to-back points. Freshman Kiara Griffin delivered the Eagles' lone service ace of the match to make it 4-2, and Husson later pulled within two at 7-5 following a Covenant setting error.
Covenant responded with a decisive run, however, building its lead to 21-5 before Fraser stopped the stretch with Husson's lone kill of the set. The Scots scored the final four points to secure the match with another 25-6 decision.
Hooker paced Husson offensively with three kills on 13 attacks while adding five digs. Preskorn finished with two kills, while Fraser totaled six assists, three digs and a block assist. Andreasen led the Eagles defensively with seven digs and added a solo block, while Griffin recorded three digs and Husson's lone service ace.
As a team, Husson finished with seven kills, six assists, 20 digs and two total blocks. Covenant recorded 38 kills while hitting .456 for the match and added 16 service aces and 33 digs.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they head to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a tri-match against the Monks and the University of Saint Joseph at 1 and 3 p.m.
