Box Score 2 Standish, ME - The Husson volleyball team rounded out its weekend with another doubleheader in the 2013 SJC Autumn Invitational Tournament at St. Joseph's College on Saturday afternoon.
For the second day in a row, the Eagles would split their two contests.
Husson got up on the wrong side of the bed against the Bates College Bobcats in the 10 a.m. match, falling in straight sets (25-7, 25-17, 25-11).
The Eagles would go on to face the Lyndon State College Hornets in a consolation match, which went back-and-forth and lasted a thrilling five games. Husson was able to pull it out in the end (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-7).
In the first match of the day, the Bobcats proved to have too much firepower for the Eagles. Bates put away 35 kills in three games, and also served up 11 aces as a team. Mary Deneen led the way with 10 kills, while Chandler McGrath notched eight kills and four solo blocks.
Husson was led by freshmen Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, ME) and Kristen Atwood (Cumberland, ME) with three kills apiece, while Chapman, Kara Graham (East Machias, ME) and Casey Lopes (New Bedford, MA) all contributed eight digs each.
The Eagles would then take a 1-2 tournament record into the consolation match against Lyndon State that would end up going the distance.
It was a complete seesaw battle, as the teams alternated victories in games one through four. Husson was able to jump out early in the fifth and deciding game to pull out their third victory of the year.
Lopes would lead the offensive attack for the Eagles in this one, as she put away 11 kills on 33 attacks to go along with 17 digs. Chapman and Emma Plouffe (Frankfort, NY) chipped in with 10 kills each, with Chapman also picking up 19 digs.
Ryan Hood (Princeton, ME) passed around 31 assists for Husson, while Graham played great in the libero position with a team-high 26 digs.
After the matches, Husson head coach Jodie Fairbank felt her team put together another solid day, saying, "After some fine-tuning with the rotation the girls settled in and started playing their game. They played well overall."
For her efforts this weekend, Husson's Lindsay Chapman was named to the 2013 SJC Autumn Invitational all-tournament team. Chapman had a great all-around weekend for the Eagles, appearing in all 15 games the team played. She compiled 29 kills, a .291 hitting percentage, 61 digs, six aces, and nine total blocks (6 solo) across four matches Friday and Saturday.
Husson ends their first week of regular season play with a 3-5 overall record. Their next match will be back at home in the Newman Gymnasium on Tuesday, September 7, at 7 p.m against the University of Southern Maine.
