Box Score Bangor, ME - Today marked the second time in a week that the Husson University and Green Mountain College women's volleyball teams have squared off, but there was a lot more on the line this time as they did battle in the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinals.
Number-four seed Husson came quickly out of the gates, and dominated play throughout the entire match on their way to a straight-set victory over #5 Green Mountain (25-10, 25-6, 25-21).
Husson (11-18) advances to face the top seed Colby-Sawyer College Chargers in a NAC semifinal match Friday night at Colby-Sawyer. Green Mountain finishes their season at 5-17.
Husson was able to limit their errors on serves (1), attacks (7), and serve-receive (8) which helped them to the efficient victory.
"We only had one service error today, which is just insane for us," Husson coach Jodie Fairbank said after the match. "We had a few runs off of serving that really helped us, and we just haven't had that happen very much."
In game one, Husson went on two separate six-point runs while Casey Lopes (New Bedford, MA) was in the service position that helped pave the way to a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Green Mountain held a slim 3-2 lead before Husson forced a side-out that rotated Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, ME) to serve. Chapman would then go on a 13-point streak to make it 16-3, which proved to be insurmountable for Green Mountain as Husson took a 2-0 advantage.
Game three wound up being hotly contested, as Green Mountain did not go away quietly. GM jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead before Husson again forced them into a key side-out which brought libero Kara Graham (East Machias, ME) to the service spot. Graham would serve her way to a seven-point run which re-gained the Eagles a lead at 10-8.
The teams would trade points back-and-forth from there, until GM was able to go on a four-point run of their own that gave them a 19-18 lead. Husson got the serve back, and again it was Chapman who led them on a decisive four-point run that gave them enough of a margin to hold on for the straight-set victory.
Every Husson Eagle that played in the match posted at least two kills.
Kristen Atwood (Cumberland, ME) paced the Eagles offense with eight kills on 15 attacks. She also had four block assists.
Alexandra deHertogh (Cumberland, RI) filled out the stat sheet for HU with seven kills on nine attacks (good for a robust .778 hitting average), two service aces, two solo blocks, and four block assists.
"D-H (deHertogh) was a force for us today. Hitting, blocking, serving...she did everything," Fairbank reflected afterwards.
Lopes had an impressive day all-around as well for Husson, as she totaled five kills, 22 assists, and 10 digs. Chapman finished with four kills, three aces, 10 digs, and two solo blocks.
Graham and Autumn Wilber (Tuftonboro, NH) each contributed a match-high 14 digs for Husson.
Green Mountain was led by Torie Cowell with four kills on the afternoon, while Madison Wage and Hayley Provost each added three.
Celeste Bowers had a team-high 11 digs for GM, while Jennifer Seredejko passed out 10 assists. Cowell and Bowers each added three aces.
