Husson Comes Up Short In NAC Championship

Castleton, VT - Elizabeth Haggerty scored a game-high five goals and earned Most Valuable Player honors as Castleton defeated Husson 19-7 in the inaugural North Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Sunday afternoon. Castleton upped its record to a program-best 12-2, while Husson wraps up its first season at 6-6.

Husson went blow-for-blow with the Spartans in the early going, taking a 4-3 lead on a Shelby Bradford eight-meter free-position goal with 8:40 remaining in the first half. The lead was short-lived, as Castleton's Marie VanDerKar tied the game at 4-4 just 16 seconds later, igniting a 7-0 Spartan run to end the half. Haggerty scored three goals during the decisive surge, including one with two seconds remaining before intermission.

Bradford got one back for the Eagles to start the second half, making it 10-5, but Castleton answered with an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach. Haggerty, VanDerKar and Jennifer Macari each scored two goals during the run.

Castleton held a 19-6 advantage in draw controls, keying the Spartan transition game. Castleton currently ranks first in the country in draw controls per game, earning 18.18 per contest.

Bradford led the Eagles with four goals and one assist, while Ashley Cyr, Rebecca Hatin and Caitlyn Butterfield each notched single goals.

Nikki Burns stopped 13 shots in the loss.

VanDerKar and Francesca Mazzola followed Haggerty in the scoring column with three goals and one assist each. Stephanie Pearce added three goals, while Schroeder and Macari each had two. Stephanie Paproski rounded out the Spartan scoring with one goal and two assists. Francesca Mazzola earned the win in net for Castleton, stopping six shots in 45 minutes of action. Rebecca Duszak stopped two shots in the final 15 minutes.
