Women’s lacrosse opens NAC play with commanding win over Thomas

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's lacrosse team held control all game Saturday afternoon, defeating Thomas College 16-3 in its North Atlantic Conference season opener at Boucher Field.

The Eagles (5-2, 1-0 NAC) would strike first, just a minute into the game, with senior Laela Martinez getting her 10th goal of the season. Husson couldn't be stopped in the first quarter, building a 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the quarter.

Sophomores Kate Boehmcke and Adella Mabee would help build this lead for the Eagles, both scoring goals. Thomas (2-3, 0-2 NAC), however, was able to cut the deficit in half before the quarter ended.

The Eagles would continue their trend of starting the quarter off hot with a goal, with senior Madison Lower scoring off a free position goal. Senior Averi Baker would get her second goal of the game, giving Husson a 6-3 lead into the break.

The Eagles would pull away in the third quarter, extending their lead to 11-3. A misplay by the Terriers would give Lower her second of the game. Mabee and Boehmcke would also score their second goals of the game this quarter, and senior Gracie Gardner would score her first. Baker would close the quarter for Husson, scoring her third goal, giving her her third hat trick in the last four games.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles would continue to pour it on. Boehmcke and Lower would both join the hat trick party, with it being Lower's first career hat trick. Baker would score two more goals this quarter, ending her day with five goals.

Baker led the way with her five goals and three assists, while Boehmcke and Lower each tallied three goals and Mabee and Gardner posted two each.

Mabee and Gardner led the Eagles in ground balls with seven and six respectively, while Martinez posted a game-high seven caused turnovers and Baker and Boehmcke recorded five draw control wins each.

Husson would hold leads in draw controls, 14-7, and converting on clears, 15-22 to Thomas' 11-29, while causing 30 turnovers.

The Eagles' defense was lockdown in the second half, not allowing a goal in the half, while only giving up seven shots all game. Sophomore Finley Pomerleau would stay in net all game, recording one save.

Husson is back at it on Tuesday, where they will face Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference play at 5 p.m. at Boucher Field.
