BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's lacrosse team would fall just short to Maine Maritime Academy in a North Atlantic Conference Championship rematch, 12-11, at Boucher Field on Tuesday evening.
The Eagles (5-3, 1-1 NAC) would strike first, with sophomore Reese Sullivan scoring a man-up goal at the 13:01 mark. Four minutes later, Husson would double their lead with help from senior Averi Baker. The Mariners (4-3, 2-0 NAC) wouldn't let Husson build their lead anymore, cutting the deficit in half just a minute later.
Husson and MMA would continue to trade goals to end the quarter, with Sullivan scoring again, along with senior Laela Martinez providing the Eagles with their fourth and final goal of the quarter, ending the period with a 4-3 lead.
The Mariners would start the second quarter with a quick score, tying up the game. It appeared that the Eagles would get their lead right back, but it would be taken back due to an illegal pocket. The game would stay locked at four apiece until the 3:30 mark when excellent transition offense by Husson resulted in a shot that zipped right into the top left corner of the net by sophomore Kate Boehmcke.
MMA would have a free position attempt with less than six seconds remaining to tie up the game, but the Eagle defense would hold strong, ending the half up 5-4.
Husson would grow their lead back to two quickly after the break, with Martinez scoring her second goal of the game off a snipe into the bottom of the net. Boehmcke would score her second goal of the game as well, just two minutes later. The largest lead of the game for the Eagles wouldn't last long, as the Mariners would score two goals in the next two minutes.
Boehmcke would get her third goal of the game at the 7:23 mark of the third, on a beautiful jump shot right over the goalie's head, giving Husson another two-goal lead. But in theme for the game, MMA would answer right back, followed by another goal for the Eagles from Sullivan, her third of the game, which would then be followed by another Mariner goal, with a 9-8 score heading into the final frame.
Just like the second quarter, MMA would start the period with a quick score to tie up the game. In a crucial free position shot for the Eagles, another goal would be taken back, this time for stepping into the crease. The Mariners would capitalize on this, scoring twice afterwards, building an 11-9 lead.
Husson would answer back, with Boehmcke scoring her fourth of the game at the 8:20 mark, cutting the deficit in half. But as in line for the game, MMA would score afterwards, getting their lead back to two goals.
With just 50 seconds left, Baker would cut the lead back down to one, but there just wasn't enough time left for the Eagles to tie it back up.
Boehmcke would lead the Eagles in goals with four, Sullivan had three, Martinez had two, and Baker had two and 3 assists, while senior Gracie Gardner also recorded a trio of helpers.
Sophomore Adella Mabee and freshman Lauren Small led the team with four ground balls apiece, while Boehmcke tallied a game-high six draw control wins.
Sophomore Finley Pomerleau would stay in net all game, recording 4 saves.
Husson is back at it on Thursday, where it'll take on Dean College at 4 p.m. at Boucher Field.
