BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University softball team earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep of University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) on Monday afternoon at O'Keefe Field by scores of 4-0 and 8-0.

Husson (5-15) ends a one game losing streak, while University of Maine at Presque Isle (17-9) dropped their 18th consecutive game to the Eagles and fall to 10-51 in the all-time series.

GAME 1: Husson 4, UMPI 0

Husson wasted no time securing the lead, as the Eagles took advantage of two hits and an Owl miscue to take a 1-0 edge in the second. Kylie Kennedy reached first on a fielding error by shortstop Carly Bell and advanced to second on an Elizabeth Richard single through the left side before scoring on Courtney MacIntyre's first collegiate hit a single up the middle to put the Eagles on the board.

A stolen base by Allison Hill and a two-base throwing error by catcher Mikayla Churchill on Hill's stolen base attempt gave Husson a 2-0 lead after the third.

The Eagles added two more runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles by Olivia Maynard and Richard making the game, 4-0.

Alannah Healy (4-9) retired the Owls in order in the seventh for her first collegiate shutout.

For the Eagles, MacIntyre went a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk and a RBI, and Richard was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Casey Heath, O. Maynard and Hill accounted for the three other Husson hits in the victory. Healy went the distance inside the circle to pick up the win allowing just three hits with six punch-outs.   

Bell, Katie Patenaude and Amanda Allen each had a hit for the Owls and Sara Packard (13-9) took the loss after yielding four runs (two earned) off seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts over 6.0 innings.

GAME 2: Husson 8, UMPI 0 in Five Innings

Husson wasted no time securing the lead once again with a pair of runs in the first on back-to-back hits by Merrill and Richards. Mallory Conary scored on Merrill's single through the left side before Merrill scored on Richards double to right field.

The Eagles added five more runs in second on a RBI double by Health, a RBI single by Merrill, a fielder's choice by Casey Lopes, a sacrifice fly by Richard and an Owl miscue on a double steal by Lopes and Merrill before Heath scored on a wild pitch on ball four to Brianna Bires in the fifth giving the Eagles the 8-0 victory due to the eight-run mercy rule.

For the Eagles, Merrill was 2-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and two RBI while Heath went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and a RBI. K. Kennedy, Richard, Gabrielle Bryant, and Conary each had a hit apiece. MacIntyre and Olivia Smith combined to throw a three hit shutout inside the circle. MacIntyre allowed just two hits in four innings of work with a walk and fanned a career-high five batters to pick up her first collegiate victory. Smith allowed one hit with two punch-outs in one inning of relief work.

Hannah Williams and Nicole Marucci accounted for all of the Owls hits in the setback. Pickard picked up the loss after allowing eight runs (two earned) on nine hits with three walks and five punch outs over 4.2 innings.

The Eagles are off until Wednesday when they host Thomas for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.  The Owls return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lyndon State for a non-conference doubleheader at noon.
