Box Score Henniker, N.H – Husson University women's soccer has advanced to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Semifinals as the Eagles tied the New England College Pilgrims 0-0 and prevailed 7-6 in penalty kicks.
With the tie the Eagles improve to 7-10-2 on the season and will travel to take on top-seeded Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday, Nov. 5 in the NAC Semifinals. The Pilgrims close out the season 8-8-3 overall.
The two teams would battle through a scoreless opening half of play as the Pilgrims would post the best scoring chance of the half in the 22nd minute as sophomore Caroline Mols (Verona, N.J.) would loft a shot that would ricochet off the crossbar.
Husson's best scoring opportunity of regulation in the 64th minute as first-year forward Shaunna Beaudoin (Brookton, Maine) would fire a shot that Pilgrim keeper Tricia Sardagnola (Shrewsbury, Mass.) would turn away.
NEC's Alyssa Krause (Northfield, N.H.) would have several chances late in regulation as one shot would be swatted away by Husson keeper Jess Poulin (Albion, Maine) and another shot would bounce off the post and out.
Neither team would be able to grab a goal in either overtime forcing penalty kicks. The two teams would go back and forth in penalty kicks before Husson's Katie Cyr (Hampden, Maine) would capitalize on a Pilgrim miss and sink the game-winner.
"We talked about finding a way to win today, no matter what, and that message ended up taking on a lot of different meanings for us," said Head Coach Carly Gettler, "This was such a crazy game against an incredibly equal NEC side, and I'm proud of the fight and heart showed by our team today."
Husson's Poulin finished the game with nine saves, while NEC's Sardagnola recorded seven saves on the afternoon.
