Husson Splits With Bowdoin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bangor, ME – The Husson University softball team split a doubleheader with Bowdoin College Sunday afternoon at O'Keefe Softball Field, moving their season record to 10-6.

Husson struggled in game one as the Polar Bears plated runs in the 3rd, 5th and 7th innings to take a 6-0 win. Bangor native Amy Hackett lead the Bowdoin charge going 2-4 with a homerun, a triple and 3 RBI.

Bowdoin scored three times in the 3rd inning starting with a single and a stolen base from Caroline Dewar, who then crossed home plate on a Toni DaCampo single. DaCampo advanced twice on passed balls and then scored on a Hackett ground out to short.

DaCampo added another run in the 5th as she homered deep to left and Hackett drove in the final run of the game in the 7th making it 6-0.

Husson's offense struggled as they only managed three hits in game one. Becca McCarty started for the Eagles and went five innings, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs.

In game two Husson gave up a run in the first inning of game two, but quickly turned around and scored twice in the bottom half. Courtney Hill and Heidi Shaw both singled on bunts back to back and advanced on a wild pitch. Victoria Overlock flied out to centerfield which scored Hill tying the game at one. Nicole Sargent walked and Brianna Webster grounded to the pitcher to score the second Husson run.

The Polar Bears tallied a second run in the top of the second, but Husson seemed to have an answer yet again. Lona Sargent singled up the middle to lead off and advanced to second when Courtney Hill walked. Both Sargent and Hill advanced on a wild pitch and Shaw drove in Sargent with a ground out back to the pitcher. Victoria Overlock then singled up the middle, plating Hill and pushed the Husson lead to 4-2.

The Eagles added another run in the fourth as Lona Sargent led off with a single, and moved to second on a ground out from Hill. Heidi Shaw stepped up and doubled to right, advancing Sargent to third who scored on an Overlock sacrifice fly.

Trailing 5-2 in the top of the 5th, Amy Hackett made her presence felt again belting a three-run homerun that bounced off the top of the scoreboard in deep left to knot things at five.

Shaw came up big again for Husson in the 6th as she singled and stole second. Nicole Sargent reached on an error and advanced to second as Shaw scored the go ahead run. The Eagles held Bowdoin scoreless in the top of the 7th to take the win and split the doubleheader.

Husson will play again this Tuesday, April 3rd at home vs. The University of Maine at 4:00pm. The Polar Bears will take the field Monday the 2nd as they host NAC member Thomas College at 3:30 and 5:30.
