Emmanuel College 6 - Maine Maritime Academy 0

The Saints of Emmanuel College were victorious in their second game of the Husson Classic, taking a 6-0 victory from the hands of Maine Maritime Academy. Emmanuel saw five different players score in the game led by Amanda Roberts (Hudson, NH) who netted a pair and assisted on another for 5 points in the morning contest.

Emmanuel got things started just under 20 minutes into the game when Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, RI) knocked the ball past the pipes off a pretty assist from Meghan Zerba (Cumberland, RI). Roberts got her first about 15 minutes later, finishing a set piece created by Shawn Crifo (Newburyport, MA) who took the Saints corner, and Emmanuel took a 2-0 lead into the half.

Donandrea Myette (Portsmouth, RI) scored the first tally of the second period around the hour mark to stretch the margin to 3. Emmanuel converted another corner in the 73rd minute when Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, MA) found Melanie Hoffman (Topsham, MA). Roberts finished the game well, setting up Alexia Basile (W. Hartford, CT) and then converting on an Emily Fallon (Hope Valley, RI) pass with both scores coming in in the last 10 minutes. 

MMA first year keeper Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, RI) turned in another impressive performance despite earning her second loss of the Classic, saving 18 of the shots she saw. She was kept busy as the Saints kicked 43 balls goalward.

Emmanuel will return home to Boston to take on Nichols this Tuesday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm. Maine Maritime will host ME-Machias at 5:00 pm on Wednesday.

University of New England 1 - Husson University 0

The Husson women's soccer team dropped its second game of the Husson Classic, falling 1-0 to the University of New England who won their second contest in the weekend. The score remained scoreless for most of the game but the Nor'easters were on the front foot the majority of the time, and pulled out in front with a goal in the 83rd minute. 

Eagle keeper Jessica Poulin (Albion, ME) played well despite the loss, notching 6 saves in the 7 shots on target, but the pressure was in her end as the Eagles tallied just 2 shots to UNE's 21. 

With less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, senior Forward and co-captain of the Nor'easters, Katie Caron (Winslow, ME) beat the Eagle defense to break the scoreless tie. 

Husson's best efforts showed in the time remaining after the lone goal, but it was not enough to claw their way back into the game and UNE held on to the 1-0 margin. 

The Eagles return to action next weekend when they head to Saratoga Springs, NY and the campus of Skidmore College where they will take on Westfield State at 3:30 pm on Saturday (9/10) and Farmingdale State at 11:30 am on Sunday (9/11) in the Skidmore College Tournament. UNE will host Curry College at 1:00 pm on Saturday in Biddeford, ME.

Men's Soccer

Maine Maritime 3 - University of New England 0

The Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy came through with a strong second half effort to oust the University of New England 1-0 to start the men's soccer action on Day 2 of the 2nd Annual Husson Classic. MMA was led by senior forward Nate Tipton (West Chester, PA) who assisted on two of the three Mariner goals in the second half.

The game remained tight throughout the first half, and the Nor'easters led in shots at the end of the period, but it was a rejeuvinated MMA squad who took the pitch in the second half, taking over the shot category 18-11 by game's end. William Lacour (Charlottesville, VA) earned his 2nd shutout of the Classic, saving all 5 shots sent his way.

Chad McDonnell (East Lyme, CT) was the first to find the back of the net just 2 minutes into the half off a corner kick from Gabriel Warren (Edgecomb, ME). The Mariners struck again in the 52nd minute when Tipton found Abdullah Alkahyyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) to stretch the lead to 2-0. Tipton struck again when another well-placed pass found Nick El-Hajj (Winterport, ME) who knocked it in with less than 10 minutes in the game to put MMA ahead for good at 3-0.

The Nor'easters put 5 of their 11 shots on net, and had 9 different players attempt shots for a balanced attack, but weren't able to convert on theit scoring chances. Devon Wescom (Swanton, VT) was on target with both of his shots to lead all UNE field players in both categories. 

Maine Maritime will host ME-Machias on Thursday following their women, with kickoff slated for 7:00 pm. UNE will make the short trip to Gorham, ME to play the University of Southern Maine on Thursday for a 4:00 pm start. 

Husson 0 - Emmanuel 0

The Eagles concluded the final game of the Husson Classic with a 0-0 tie to Emmanuel College, squeezing every second of light out of the second day, but one OT period was all that could be played with the impending darkness. Husson was on the front foot for most of the game, and seemingly in control of the action, but they weren't able to convert on the scoring chances. 

Husson seemed to have broken the deadlock with 3:27 left in the first when Greg Dawson (St. Andrews, Scotland) played an Eagle cross into the back of the net. After a conference between the referee and the side judge, it was determined that a ball had glanced off a Husson player who was offside, and the goal was taken off the board. 

Emmanuel first year keeper Garrett Charette (W. Springfield, MA) played all 100 minutes, for a two day total of 210 minutes: all without a goal for two shutouts in the Classic. First year goalie Brian Potter (Watervile, ME) and junior Mason Smith (Houma, LA) combined to earn the Shutout for the Eagles. 

Both teams fought hard throughout the game which was tense from the first to the final whistle. Often times the fighting was too hard for the officials who liberally handed out a total of 31 fouls and 4 Yellow Cards in the physical contest. 

Head Coach Jeff Gettler had mixed emotions after the game, "I thought both teams came out and looked rather sloppy to start things off, but both teams gave great effort, and I thought ours was particularly good. We got past them a few times and made some chances, the best of which was the goal that called back.

"On that chance lightning struck in a literal manner and the officials suspended the game with about three minutes left in the first. After that there was a 30 minute break before we finished, and then no half time. I think both teams came out of that pretty flat and they never really recovered." Gettler continued. 

He went on to talk about the way his team closed out the game, "In the second half and the overtime period we had the wind at our back, which helped us get some good looking chances that we just never got on top of."

Looking forward, Gettler seemed excited about his team, "In the last three days we've become a fighting machine. We're intense, and everyone's playing for eachother, and that's good to see."

His Eagles will take the pitch again next weekend when they head to North Adams, MA for the MCLA CIAO Classic where they'll see Union (NY) at noon on Saturday (9/10) and host MCLA on Sunday (9/11) at 2:00 pm. Emmanuel will travel to Mitchell College in New London, CT on Thursday at 4:00 pm.
