ORONO, Maine – The Husson University men's track & field team took second place as a squad on Saturday at the University of Maine Spring Opener with a strong all-around performance, highlighted by three event victories and several additional scoring efforts.
Husson's day began on the track in the 100 meters, where freshman Gabriel Fairbrother led the Eagles with a time of 13.11 seconds, followed by junior Gage Moody in 13.29 and senior Lucas Fendl in 13.35.
The Eagles followed in the 200 meters with Moody posting a 27.00, Fendl finishing in 27.40, and graduate student Richard Cromwell crossing in 27.96.
Husson returned to the track for the 800 meters, where Cromwell delivered a scoring performance with a third-place finish in 2:24.03. Sophomore Ian Cottrell also scored in the event, placing fifth in 2:27.72.
In the 1,500 meters, junior Thomas Hinton represented Husson with a time of 5:22.84.
The distance events continued with junior Micah Bryan competing in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 10:59.00.
Husson then saw strong success in the hurdles, as sophomore Matthew Scamman won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.65 seconds to earn 10 points. He later returned in the 400 hurdles to place third in 1:04.47, adding six more points.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase Bryan captured first place in 12:23.62, while Hinton followed in second place in 13:15.69, which was a new personal-best, to secure a 1-2 finish for Husson.
Husson closed out the track events with the 4x400-meter relay, as the team of Fairbrother, Cromwell, freshman Oden Schlager, and Scamman placed fourth with a time of 3:56.85.
In the field events, the Eagles turned in several strong performances across the jumps and throws.
Cottrell opened Husson's scoring in the field with a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 2.80 meters, while in the long jump, Moody recorded a mark of 4.88 meters.
Senior Max MacCallum later scored in the shot put with a sixth-place throw of 11.52 meters. He also added marks of 29.37 meters in the discus and 29.21 meters in the hammer throw.
Senior Jaden Grazulis placed sixth in the discus with a mark of 34.76 meters and followed with a third-place finish in the hammer throw at a personal-best distance of 38.07 meters. Schlager added a 29.42-meter throw in the discus, senior Trey Goodwin posted a mark of 25.76 meters, and senior Kyle Hofmann recorded a throw of 21.70 meters.
Husson capped the meet with a dominant showing in the javelin, as Fairbrother won the event with a personal-best throw of 49.65 meters. Hofmann placed third with a personal-best mark of 43.34 meters, while Goodwin finished sixth at 40.43 meters. Freshman Parker Hunter added a throw of 39.15 meters, followed by Grazulis at 38.48 meters, Schlager at 34.05 meters, and MacCallum at 26.36 meters.
The Eagles head to Standish next weekend as they compete in the Monks Invitational, hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday.
