Men’s track & field places third at NAC championships, earns four event wins

ORONO, Maine — The Husson University men's track & field team turned in a strong performance at the 2026 North Atlantic Conference Track & Field Championships, highlighted by four event wins and a new program record in the 4x100 meter relay.

Starting in the 100 meters, senior Christian Zapata led the Eagles with a fourth-place finish in the finals, clocking 11.45 seconds, while junior Carmy Kaniki placed seventh in 12.01 seconds.

In the 200 meters, Kaniki delivered a standout performance with a second-place finish in 22.89 seconds. Sophomore Matthew Scamman added a sixth-place finish in 23.38 seconds. Junior Dillon Haughton (24.10) and Zapata (24.51) also competed for Husson.

Kaniki continued his impressive weekend in the 400 meters, winning the conference title with a DIII New England qualifying time of 50.73 seconds. Graduate student Richard Cromwell placed ninth in 57.72 seconds, while juniors Gage Moody (1:00.51) and Micah Bryan (1:01.59) also ran for the Eagles.

In the 800 meters, sophomore Ian Cottrell led Husson with a 13th-place finish in 2:27.26, followed by Cromwell in 14th at 2:30.36.

In the 110-meter hurdles, the Eagles dominated the event, as Scamman won the conference title in a DIII New England qualifying time of 15.60 seconds. Junior Mykal Roberson followed with a second-place finish in 16.26 seconds, also meeting the DIII New England standard, while Zapata placed fourth in 17.25 seconds.

The Eagles continued their success in the 400-meter hurdles, with Zapata winning the event in a DIII New England qualifying time of 58.19 seconds and Scamman finishing second in 58.71 seconds, also a qualifying mark. Junior Thomas Hinton added a fifth-place finish in 1:07.13, while Kaniki (1:08.90) and senior Lucas Fendl (1:11.89) also competed.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Bryan placed eighth in 11:58.97, followed by Hinton in ninth at 12:10.59 and Fendl in 10th with a time of 14:49.99.

Husson captured the 4x100-meter relay title, as Haughton, Kaniki, Scamman and Zapata combined for a winning time of 43.29 seconds, which also set a new program record for Husson.

In the 4x400-meter relay, the Eagles placed third with a time of 3:39.91, as Zapata, Cromwell, Scamman and Kaniki represented Husson.

Scamman recorded a third-place finish in the long jump with a DIII New England qualifying mark of 6.62 meters. Haughton placed seventh at 6.07 meters, while Kaniki (5.97), Moody (5.50) and senior Max MacCallum (5.42) also competed.

In the triple jump, Roberson placed fourth with a mark of 12.38 meters, while senior Trey Goodwin finished fifth at 12.15 meters. Moody also competed with a mark of 10.86 meters.

MacCallum led Husson in the shot put with a fourth-place finish at 12.11 meters. Senior Jaden Grazulis (10.30), senior Kyle Hofmann (9.65) and freshman Oden Schlager (9.46) also competed.

In the discus, Grazulis placed fourth with a throw of 37.80 meters. Schlager (31.17), MacCallum (30.46), Hofmann (27.61) and Goodwin (25.39) also represented the Eagles.

In the javelin, freshman Gabriel Fairbrother led the Eagles with a third-place finish at 49.74 meters. Goodwin (41.66), Hofmann (41.16), Hunter (40.77), Schlager (39.71) and Grazulis (35.01) also competed.

The Eagles close out their outdoor season on May 1 and 2 with the New England Division III Outdoor Championships at Springfield College.
