LEWISTON, Maine – The Husson University men's track & field team competed at the Maine State Meet, hosted by Bates College on Saturday, turning in a number of strong performances across the two-day meet, including a program record setting performance from junior Carmy Kaniki in the 100 meters.
Husson opened the track portion of the meet in the 100 meters, where Kaniki led the Eagles with a fifth-place finish in 11.08 seconds, earning four team points and posting a DIII New England qualifying mark, in addition to breaking the mark of Robenson Saintard that was set eight years ago in the event. Senior Christian Zapata added a time of 11.53 seconds, senior Dillon Haughton crossed in 11.67 seconds, sophomore Matthew Scamman posted an 11.69-second effort and freshman Gabriel Fairbrother finished in 12.63 seconds, as Haughton and Scamman each posted new personal-bests in the event.
In the 200 meters, Scamman picked up another point for the Eagles with an eighth-place finish in a personal-best time of 23.35 seconds.
Junior Gage Moody represented Husson in the 400 meters and recorded a time of 1:01.04.
Husson then moved into the middle-distance events in the 800 meters, where junior Thomas Hinton led the way with a time of 2:19.02 to set a new personal-best, while graduate student Richard Cromwell followed in 2:22.73.
In the 5,000 meters, junior Micah Bryan posted a time of 20:23.93 to wrap up the distance track events for Husson.
In the hurdles, Zapata scored for Husson in the 400-meter hurdles, placing seventh in 1:00.22 for two team points, while senior Lucas Fendl added a time of 1:12.41.
Husson also scored in the relay events. The 4x100-meter relay team of Haughton, Kaniki, Scamman and Zapata finished fifth in 43.84 seconds to earn four points. In the 4x800-meter relay, the quartet of Bryan, Cromwell, sophomore Ian Cottrell and Hinton placed second in 10:11.58 to score eight points.
In the field events, junior Mykal Roberson and Zapata both cleared 1.72 meters in the high jump, finishing tied for ninth. In the pole vault, freshman Parker Hunter led the Eagles with a clearance of 3.25 meters, while Cottrell cleared 2.80 meters and both Lucas Fendl and Thomas Hinton cleared 2.65 meters to set new personal-bests.
In the horizontal jumps, Dillon Haughton just missed a scoring spot in the long jump with a personal-best, ninth-place leap of 6.28 meters. Kaniki added a mark of 6.05 meters, Scamman reached 5.97 meters, Moody posted a 5.50-meter jump and senior Max MacCallum recorded a mark of 4.94 meters. In the triple jump, Roberson turned in Husson's best finish in the event, placing sixth with a leap of 12.22 meters to score three team points.
Husson's throwers also produced several point-scoring performances. In the shot put, MacCallum finished eighth with a mark of 11.81 meters to earn one point. Freshman Oden Schlager added a personal-best throw of 9.76 meters, senior Kyle Hofmann posted a mark of 9.01 meters, Fairbrother reached 8.69 meters and Bryan threw 8.04 meters.
In the discus, senior Jaden Grazulis earned a point for the Eagles with an eighth-place throw of 33.70 meters. Schlager followed with a mark of 30.73 meters, MacCallum reached 30.35 meters, Hofmann threw 29.09 meters to set a new personal-best and senior Trey Goodwin posted a mark of 26.30 meters.
In the hammer throw, Grazulis turned in one of Husson's top field-event performances of the meet, placing fifth with a personal-best throw of 40.63 meters to score four points. MacCallum added a mark of 31.18 meters, while Hofmann reached 19.35 meters to eclipse his personal-best in the event.
Husson closed out the meet in the javelin, where Gabriel Fairbrother led the Eagles with a fourth-place finish and a throw of 49.42 meters to score five points. Goodwin added a new personal-best mark of 43.45 meters, Hofmann threw 41.97 meters and Hunter recorded a throw of 35.64 meters.
The Eagles will look to build on those performances as the outdoor season continues next weekend with the North Atlantic Conference Championships set to take place on Saturday and Sunday on the campus of the University of Maine at Orono.
