BANGOR, Maine — The No. 20 Husson University softball team powered its way to a dominant North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep over Vermont State Lyndon on Sunday at O'Keefe Field, winning game one 19-0 and game two 20-0.
Game 1: No. 20 Husson 19, VTSU Lyndon 0 (5 innings)
Husson (18-3, 3-0 NAC) wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, scoring in every inning en route to a 19-run outburst. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from senior Tayler Watterson, the Eagles broke the game open in the second inning. Capitalizing on defensive miscues and aggressive baserunning, Husson plated four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from senior Morgan Curtis and a run-scoring passed ball.
The Eagles delivered the decisive blow in the third inning, erupting for seven runs. Freshman Lilly Snow cleared the bases with a three-run double, junior Camryn King followed with an RBI bunt single, and senior Morgan Tainter capped the inning with a three-run inside-the-park home run to push the lead to 12-0.
Husson added another seven-run frame in the fourth inning, continuing to apply pressure throughout the lineup. Snow, Curtis, Tainter, and freshman Jetta Shook all drove in runs during the inning as the Eagles extended the lead to 19-0.
Tainter led the offensive attack, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including her inside-the-park home run. Snow added two doubles and four RBIs, while Curtis finished with two hits and three RBIs. Shook contributed two hits and three runs scored, and King added a hit, two runs, and two stolen bases.
In the circle, junior Ana Lang was dominant, striking out eight over three hitless innings to earn the win. Freshman Braelynn Wilcox closed out the game, allowing just two hits over the final two innings. Husson's pitching staff combined to strike out 10 and limit Lyndon (2-3, 0-3 NAC) to just two hits.
Game 2: No. 20 Husson 20, VTSU Lyndon 0 (4 innings)
The Eagles (19-3, 4-0 NAC) carried their momentum into game two, exploding for 14 runs in the first inning to immediately take control. Husson strung together 11 hits in the frame, using a mix of timely hitting and defensive errors to build a commanding lead. Key moments included RBI hits from freshman Sydney Carnes and Watterson, a sacrifice fly from Snow, and a two-run home run from senior Lydia Rice.
Husson continued to add on in the second inning with RBI singles from junior Jazmin Johnson and Watterson, pushing the lead to 16-0. The Eagles tacked on four more runs in the third, with Snow delivering a two-run double and King and Watterson each adding RBIs to cap the scoring at 20-0.
The offense was relentless throughout, as Husson tallied 20 hits in the game. King led the way with three hits, three runs scored, and two stolen bases, while Tainter added three hits and three runs. Watterson was a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs, and Carnes contributed two hits and two RBIs. Snow added three RBIs, and Rice drove in three runs, including her home run in the opening inning.
Junior Sierra Yates earned the win in the circle, striking out six and allowing just two hits over three shutout innings. Wilcox again provided relief, tossing a scoreless final frame. Husson pitchers combined for seven strikeouts while limiting Lyndon (2-4, 0-4 NAC) to just two hits for the second consecutive game.
The Eagles return to non-conference action on Tuesday when they head south on I-95 to battle the University of New England at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader.
