Kaniki posts two top-three finishes for men’s track & field at Monks Invite

STANDISH, Maine – The Husson University men's track & field team competed at the Monks Track & Field Invite on Saturday at Saint Joseph's College of Maine, with the Eagles turning in a number of strong performances throughout the day.

Husson opened the meet in the 100 meters, where freshman Gabriel Fairbrother led the Eagles with a time of 12.75 seconds. Junior Gage Moody followed in 12.80, a new personal-best, senior Lucas Fendl crossed in 13.36, and freshman Parker Hunter finished in 14.38.

In the 200 meters, junior Carmy Kaniki posted one of Husson's top performances of the day, placing third overall in a personal-best time of 22.93 seconds. Sophomore Matthew Scamman added a time of 25.22, senior Christian Zapata finished in 25.41, junior Thomas Hinton came through in 26.18, Moody ran 26.54 to set another personal-best, and graduate student Richard Cromwell posted a 27.26.

Kaniki followed that up with another big finish in the 400 meters, taking second overall in a personal-best 52.99 seconds. Zapata added a 56.72, Hinton ran 59.24, and Cromwell finished in 1:01.03.

In the 800 meters, Cromwell represented the Eagles and placed 11th with a time of 2:27.90.

Zapata and junior Mykal Roberson competed for Husson in the 110-meter hurdles. Zapata placed fifth overall in 18.87 seconds, while Roberson finished ninth in 21.38.

Scamman then turned in a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles, taking second place in a personal-best time of 1:01.04.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Hinton placed sixth in a personal-best time of 12:45.51, while Fendl finished ninth in 14:55.53.

Husson's 4x100 relay team of Roberson, Kaniki, Zapata, and Scamman placed seventh with a time of 48.04.

In the high jump, Roberson cleared 1.53 meters. Husson then had three competitors in the pole vault, where sophomore Ian Cottrell and Hunter each cleared 2.95 meters to finish fifth and sixth, with Hunter setting a new personal-best, while Fendl cleared 2.35 meters.

In the long jump, Moody posted a mark of 5.30 meters and senior Max MacCallum added a 5.29-meter effort.

Husson followed with a pair of top-eight finishes in the triple jump, as senior Trey Goodwin placed seventh with a mark of 11.56 meters and Roberson finished eighth at 11.35 meters.

In the shot put, MacCallum led the Eagles with a seventh-place throw of 12.05 meters, while senior Jaden Grazulis recorded a mark of 8.74 meters.

Grazulis paced Husson in the discus with a sixth-place throw of 37.13 meters. MacCallum added a personal-best mark of 31.25 meters, freshman Oden Schlager posted a 30.82-meter throw and senior Kyle Hofmann recorded a 22.07-meter effort.

In the hammer throw, Grazulis added another sixth-place finish with a personal-best mark of 38.92 meters. MacCallum also competed and posted a throw of 31.63 meters.

Husson closed out the meet in the javelin with another strong showing. Fairbrother led the way with a third-place finish on a throw of 48.03 meters. Hofmann placed eighth at 39.99 meters, while Hunter threw 38.38 meters, Schlager posted a personal-best throw of 37.91 meters, Grazulis reached 36.69 meters, and Goodwin added a throw of 35.92 meters.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they take part in the Maine State Championship Meet, hosted by Bates College at the Russell Street Track & Field.
