SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Husson University men's track & field team competed on Saturday at the Yellow Jacket Open, with the Eagles competing across the track and in the field throughout the day.
Husson opened the meet in the 100 meters, where junior Carmy Kaniki led the way with a fourth-place finish in 11.39 seconds. Senior Christian Zapata followed in seventh at 11.51 seconds, while junior Dillon Haughton placed 22nd in 12.17 seconds and freshman Gabriel Fairbrother came in 26th in 13.02 seconds.
In the 200 meters, Haughton posted Husson's top time with a 24th-place finish in 25.89 seconds. Junior Thomas Hinton was 27th in 27.55 seconds, senior Richard Cromwell took 28th in 28.02 seconds, junior Micah Bryan placed 29th in 28.29 seconds and freshman Parker Hunter finished 32nd in 28.94 seconds. Cromwell also competed in the 800 meters and placed 12th with a time of 2:26.76
The Eagles then moved to the 1,500 meters, where Hinton recorded a 14th-place finish with a time of 5:15.00.
In the 5,000 meters, Bryan turned in Husson's highest finish on the distance side, placing fifth in 19:38.98.
Husson was also represented in the hurdles, beginning with the 110-meter hurdles. Junior Mykal Roberson placed fourth in 16.66 seconds to give the Eagles one of their top finishes of the day.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Kaniki placed sixth in 1:03.02, which was good for a new personal-best and Zapata followed in seventh with a time of 1:03.54.
The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team of Haughton, Kaniki, sophomore Matthew Scamman and Zapata finished fourth overall in 45.84 seconds.
In the high jump, Zapata tied for eighth after clearing 1.70 meters, while Hunter then turned in a strong showing in the pole vault, finishing second with a clearance of 2.60 meters.
The long jump saw three Husson competitors in action. Scamman placed sixth with a leap of 5.99 meters, Kaniki finished eighth with a mark of 5.75 meters and junior Gage Moody took 10th at 4.98 meters.
In the triple jump, Roberson added another scoring finish by taking sixth with a mark of 11.78 meters and senior Trey Goodwin was seventh at 11.32 meters.
Senior Max MacCallum represented Husson in the shot put and placed 19th with a throw of 10.24 meters.
In the discus, senior Jaden Grazulis led the Eagles with a 14th-place throw of 34.58 meters. Freshman Oden Schlager placed 26th at 29.07 meters, MacCallum was 28th at 27.21 meters and senior Kyle Hofmann finished 39th with a mark of 21.75 meters.
The hammer throw followed, where Grazulis took 15th with a toss of 31.54 meters and MacCallum finished 18th at 28.75 meters.
Husson closed the day in the javelin, where Fairbrother posted one of the team's top performances with a fourth-place and personal-best throw of 47.61 meters. Hunter added an eighth-place finish at 39.22 meters, Hofmann was 10th at 37.34 meters, Grazulis placed 13th with a mark of 36.06 meters, Schlager took 14th and a new personal-best at 35.99 meters, Goodwin finished 15th at 35.91 meters and MacCallum came in 23rd with a throw of 27.33 meters, which cleared a new personal-best.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday for the Black Bear Meet at the University of Maine at the New Balance Outdoor Track & Field Complex.
