WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University men's track & field team recorded a strong set of finals performances at the Mule Tune-Up on Saturday at Colby College, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 4x400-meter relay and several top-eight results across the sprints, jumps and throws.
Husson's best finish on the track came in the 4x400-meter relay, where sophomore Matthew Scamman, freshman Oden Schlager, senior Christian Zapata and junior Carmy Kaniki placed second in 3:54.26, finishing just behind York County Community College (3:53.05).
In sprint finals, Kaniki led Husson in the 60 meters, placing sixth with a time of 7.41, while Zapata followed in eighth at 7.43. Zapata also turned in a strong run in the 400 meters, finishing fourth in 57.18, as Husson placed three athletes in the event with junior Micah Bryan taking sixth in 1:00.61 and Schlager finishing seventh in 1:00.99.
Husson had two finalists in the 200 meters, led by graduate student Richard Cromwell, who finished 14th in 27.16, with senior Kyle Hofmann close behind in 15th at 27.33. Cromwell also added a finals performance in the 600 meters, placing eighth with a time of 1:40.79.
In the middle distances, junior Thomas Hinton led the Eagles in the 800 meters, finishing 14th in 2:25.08, while Bryan returned for his second finals event of the day and placed 15th in 2:30.52.
Husson collected multiple finals finishes in the jumps. In the high jump, junior Mykal Roberson finished fourth after clearing 1.79m, with Zapata also clearing 1.79m to place sixth. In the pole vault, both sophomore Ian Cottrell and freshman Parker Hunter cleared 2.83m to tie for 10th, with Hunter setting a new personal-best.
In the horizontal jumps, junior Gage Moody paced Husson in the long jump with a mark of 5.24m to place 14th, while senior Trey Goodwin finished 15th at 4.89m and Cottrell added a 16th-place finish at 4.43m. Husson's top placement in the triple jump came from Kaniki, who placed fourth with a personal-best of 12.18m, while Roberson finished eighth at 11.69m. Goodwin (11.52m), Scamman (11.21m) and Schlager (11.13m) also competed in the finals.
In the throws, senior Jaden Grazulis led Husson in both events, placing 11th in the shot put with a mark of 10.87m and earning a fifth-place finish in the weight throw at 11.29m. Husson also received a 13th-place shot put finish from senior Max MacCallum (9.75m), while freshman Gabriel Fairbrother posted 8.62m and Hofmann added 8.43m in the event.
The Eagles conclude their indoor season on Saturday with the New England Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Track at New Balance in Boston, Massachusetts.
