Moczygemba promoted to head cross country, track & field coach

BANGOR, Maine — Husson University Athletics announced Tuesday the promotion of Mitchell Moczygemba from interim head coach to head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs.

"I am very honored to be named the head coach of Husson University Cross Country and Track and Field," said Moczygemba. "I want to thank the university and athletic department for their continued support. Last year we had a lot of success as a team, and I'm excited to continue working with our athletes and see what they can accomplish."

In his first year leading the track & field program, Moczygemba coached two NCAA Division III New England qualifiers. The Eagles' distance medley relay team qualified during the indoor season, while senior David Hileman qualified in the 10,000 meters during the outdoor season.

Additionally, Hileman was named the North Atlantic Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Senior Scholar-Athlete. Two Eagles earned NAC championship titles — one in the 400-meter hurdles and the other in the triple jump — while also collecting two runner-up finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and 5,000 meters.

"We're proud to officially elevate Mitch Moczygemba to the role of head cross country and track and field coach," said Associate Athletic Director and Head Athletic Trainer Janine Gmitter. "Over the past six months as the interim head coach, he has earned the trust of our student-athletes and continues to move the program forward. This promotion is a recognition of the great work coach Moczygemba has already done and the confidence we have in the future of the program under his guidance."

On the women's side, Moczygemba coached seven NCAA New England qualifiers. Freshman Natasha Monreal qualified in both the long jump and triple jump, while junior Nina Gregory advanced in the high jump. The Eagles also had two relay teams qualify during the indoor season. In outdoor competition, Gregory and senior Ava Dowling both earned New England qualifying honors, with Dowling finishing as state runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Husson had four athletes earn NAC championships in the 400-meter dash, 3,000-meter steeplechase, pole vault, and hammer throw. Three individuals and one relay team earned runner-up finishes in the 200-meter dash, 1,500-meter run, high jump, and 4x100-meter relay, respectively.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mitch Moczygemba as the new head coach of Husson's cross country and track and field programs," said VP and interim athletic director Chris Grotton. "Coach Moczygemba brings a wealth of experience, passion, and a proven track record of developing student-athletes both on and off the track. His leadership and vision will be instrumental as we continue to build a program rooted in excellence, discipline and integrity. We're excited for the future of our track and field program under his direction."

With his first full track & field season under his belt, Moczygemba will now take over head coaching duties for cross country after serving as an assistant coach the past two seasons under former head coach Kate Goupee.
