Goupee steps away from cross country, track & field programs

| By:
BANGOR, Maine — The most successful cross country and track & field coach in Husson University history is stepping away from the program to be with family and pursue other interests.

Husson head men's and women's cross country and track & field coach Kate Goupee announced her decision on Monday to step away as head coach.

"Thank you to Husson University for providing me the opportunity to be a part of the Eagle family and the privilege of working with the student-athletes for well over a decade," Goupee said. "Thank you also to all my colleagues and family that have supported my passion for coaching as well as the cross country and track and field programs. I leave enriched from the experience and excited for the future of Husson athletics!"

After being named head cross country coach in 2012 Goupee led the women's program to North Atlantic Conference Championships in 2012, 2022 and 2023 and a men's championship in 2018. The two-time NAC women's coach of the year mentored two women's runner of the year selections, three senior scholar athletes, 40 all-conference performers and one Clara Swan Female Athlete of the year recipient. On the men's side, Goupee coached one senior scholar athlete, eight all-conference runners and had one Del Merrill Athlete of the Year honoree in addition to one national qualifier in Joel Bond in 2021.

Goupee's teams earned 23 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic Team Awards, 13 on the women's side and 10 on the men's.

"I want to thank Kate for her many years of service to Husson University and our athletic department as our cross country and track and field coach," stated Director of Athletics John Sutyak. "Although my work with her was only for a short time, her work and dedication to Husson is evident. She built conference championship teams and mentored numerous all-conference and all-region student-athletes.  We are thankful for her dedication to this institution and our student-athletes."

On the track, Goupee guided the Eagles to seven NAC titles, four overall and one East Division title for the women and one overall and one East Division title for the men, in over a decade at the helm. She coached 18 All-New England performers, three State of Maine Champions and her teams earned 16 USTFCCCA academic team awards.

The six-time coach of the year between both men's and women's track & field coached three field athletes of the year, four track athletes of the year, three rookie of the year honorees and four senior scholar athlete selections.

Additionally, Goupees' teams won numerous individual and relay conference championships during her time with the Eagles, and she saw two of her athletes selected to the Husson Sports Hall of Fame with Alecia Palmer in 2023 and Eric Hathaway in 2024.
