BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Husson University men's track & field team opened its indoor season with several individual performances at the UBears Alumni Invite, highlighted by a program record in the 500M from junior Carmy Kaniki, an event win in the 4x800 relay, and a victory in the high jump.
The Eagles took home the top two spots in the high jump, where senior Christian Zapata and junior Mykal Roberson matched heights throughout the competition and ultimately tied for first place at 1.77 meters.
Junior Carmy Kaniki led Husson's sprinting efforts with an excellent day across multiple races. After qualifying for the finals in the 60 meters with a 7.34 prelims performance, Kaniki placed fifth overall in the championship heat in 7.36 seconds. He followed that up with a third-place finish in the 500 meters, crossing the line in 1:13.39, which set a new program record in the event.
The Eagles added three top 10 finishes in the 200 meters, as Zapata paced the group with a seventh-place finish in 24.24, followed closely by sophomore Shane Conti and freshman Wade Desrosiers, who posted matching times of 25.11.
In the hurdles, Husson picked up a top three finish, as sophomore Matthew Scamman placed third in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.04 seconds. Scamman added a top-five finish in the long jump as well, hitting 5.85 meters to place fifth overall.
Roberson also earned a podium result in the triple jump, securing third place with an 11.50-meter performance.
The Husson 4 x 800 relay team took home first place with a time of 9:43.86 from juniors Micah Bryan and Thomas Hinton and freshmen Jake Violette and Oden Schlager.
Senior Jaden Grazulis led the way in the weight throw for the Eagles with a fifth-place performance at 12.38 meters.
Husson returns to the track on Friday for the UMaine Black Bear Invitational in Orono.
