AMHERST, Mass. - The Husson University softball team fell just short of advancing to the Amherst Regional championship round in their first try after a 3-2 defeat to No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Amherst Softball Field. With the loss, the Eagles will play at around 4:30 p.m. today versus the winner of the Amherst vs. Rochester game with the second spot in the championship round on the line and a potential rematch with the Marlins. 

It was a scoreless contest until the third inning as the Marlins (35-11) scored the first three runs. 

The Eagles (27-10) though would battle back in the sixth inning. Senior Meagan Gosselin reached first on a fielder's choice then freshman Juila Gregoire ripped one up the middle to set up two on and one out. Sophomore Jess Pomerleau pinch ran for Gregoire as Pomerleau and Gosselin pulled off the double steal to put both in scoring position. Freshman Brianne McCabe delivered in the clutch moment with a base hit to score both runs and make it 3-2 Marlins. 

In the seventh, the Eagles had a chance to tie or even win the game but the Marlins got out of the jam and came away with the 3-2 victory. 

The Eagles did manage to outhit the defending national champions while sophomore Kenzie Dore was walked in all four plate appearances. 

Graduate student Jen Jones started the contest in the circle for the Eagles as she pitched the first four innings before being replaced by junior McKenna Smith for the final three.
