Box Score AMHERST, Mass. - The Husson University softball team began play in the NCAA regional on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over the No. 22 Amherst College Mammoths at the Amherst Softball Field.
The Eagles (27-9) opened up the scoring in the first as senior Katie Windsor earned a walk then scored as sophomore Kenzie Dore drove a triple off the wall in right field. The Mammoths (24-8) would tie the game in the bottom half as it was 1-1 after one.
The game would remain tied until the fifth when the Eagles took the lead thanks to three runs on four hits. With two outs, senior Meagan Gosselin, freshman Brianne McCabe, and junior Katie Raymond each recorded a base hit as the Eagled led, 4-1, after five.
In the sixth, Dore put the game to bed with a two run homer to right center field as the Eagles won the contest, 6-1.
Junior McKenna Smith threw a four hitter in the circle as she struck out five and picked up her 18th victory of the season.
After taking down the NESCAC champions; the Eagles will take on the defending national champions in No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan with a berth to the regional championship round on the line. The Eagles and Marlins will compete tomorrow at noon.
