Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine - Junior McKenna Smith combined for 17 strikeouts in seven-plus innings pitched as the Husson University softball team recorded a non-conference sweep of the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday afternoon at O'Keefe Field. The Eagles took game one via run rule, 6-0, before sneaking out of game two with a 3-2 victory.
The Eagles (10-6) took the lead early in the first inning and never looked back. Smart awareness by senior Katie Windsor scored the first run of game one as the Monks were caught standing still and allowed Windsor to steal home.
The Eagles remained in front by a run until the bottom of the fifth as they blew the game open. Sophomore Kenzie Dore drove in two runs on a single through the left side of the infield then she and senior Whitney Bess scored on a passed ball to make it, 5-0.
In the sixth, the Eagles would walk it off to take game one, 8-0. A RBI walk by sophomore Olivia McCarty got the scoring started then Dore grounded out to bring home sophomore Jess Pomerleau then the Eagles would score the eighth run via a wild pitch.
McKenna Smith pitched a two-hitter in the circle as she struck out 13 including six looking. The junior recorded her 100th strikeout of the season in the victory.
Game two saw a familiar sight as the Eagles opened the scoring in the first inning as a sacrifice fly from Bess scored Dore.
Dore would extend the lead to 3-0 in the third inning as she hit a rocket over the center field wall for a two run homer.
The Monks (8-10) would fight their way back in the sixth as they scored two runs with two outs. Smith came into relief for the Eagles and recorded the final four outs via strikeouts to claim the victory for Husson.
Junior Jill Bisson earned the victory in the circle as she pitched five-plus innings and struck out three while giving up two runs.
The softball team will turn their attention to North Atlantic Conference play as they will host Northern Vermont-Lyndon for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. at O'Keefe Field.
