Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University softball team completed a perfect home regular season with a doubleheader sweep over the Owls of UMaine-Presque Isle on Monday afternoon at O'Keefe Field. The Eagles won both contests in five innings as they won the North Atlantic Conference matchup, 10-0, then the non-conference victory, 17-2.
The Eagles (20-6, 7-0 NAC) scored runs in the first three innings of the contest to claim the conference victory of the afternoon. Four batters in and the Eagles scored the first run as senior Meagan Gosselin's patience earned herself a RBI walk. Sophomore Teagan Blackie doubled down the left field line to score Gosselin after an Owl error to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead after one.
Husson scored twice in the second inning thanks to another UMPI error then a ground out by senior Whitney Bess to score sophomore Kenzie Dore.
In the third inning, the Eagles tacked on five runs highlighted by Blackie and Dore tripling as the Eagles won, 10-0.
In the circle, junior McKenna Smith faced 16 batters and struck out 15 of them for the victory.
In game two, UMPI (3-21, 2-3 NAC) threatened to score in the first inning as they had the bases loaded with one out but the defense got a double play as a liner was caught by Dore then caught the runner on third off the bag. The green and gold carried that momentum into the bottom half of the inning to score a run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Bess as Blackie scored.
Blackie continued her impressive day in the second with a single to bring home two runs followed by a Dore RBI triple to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Eagles scored eight runs in the third inning highlighted by a RBI triple from sophomore Jess Pomerleau and a two run RBI double from Bess.
In the fourth inning, freshman Tori Exel crushed a grand slam over the center field wall as the Eagles took the 17-2 non-conference victory.
Graduate student Jen Jones started the contest in the circle for the Eagles as she allowed three hits and struck out three. Freshman Tatyanna Biamby closed out the game as she recorded the final three outs.
It's back to the road for the softball team as they close out the regular season with a six-game road trip beginning on Saturday with a conference doubleheader at Thomas College starting at 1:00 p.m.
