Box Score 2 FARMINGTON, Maine — Husson University softball junior McKenna Smith made history Friday afternoon, striking out a program-record 18 batters, while throwing the 19th no-hitter in school history, helping her team pick up a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep against University of Maine at Farmington by scores of 9-0 and 6-2.
Husson (18-6, 6-0 NAC) wasted no time adding to its 10-game winning streak on Friday putting up two quick runs in the first inning, scoring off senior Meagan Gosselin's RBI double to left field before adding its second run on an RBI single by sophomore Julia Gregoire.
That would be all the offense Smith would need as she mowed down a record 18 UMF batters over seven no-hit innings without allowing a walk, while posting four innings where she struck out the side.
The Eagles would add an insurance run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by senior Katie Windsor before plating four more runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 7-0 advantage.
Senior Madelyn Fowler singled driving in the first of those two runs while junior Katie Raymond drove in the third and Windsor added her second of three RBI's on the day to concluded the innings scoring.
Husson's bats would stay hot in the final inning, as Windsor tallied her final RBI to push the advantage to 8-0 and Raymond stole home for the final run to give the Eagles the 9-0 win.
Windsor finished 3-5 at the dish, while sophomore Kenzie Dore and Gosselin each tallied two hits apiece.
UMaine-Farmington (1-17, 0-2 NAC) would benefit from two runs in the first inning in game two to take an early 2-0 edge, but Husson wouldn't go down without a fight.
The Eagles tied the game with two runs in the third inning off back-to-back RBI doubles by freshman Brianne McCabe and Mackenzie Wendelken.
Freshman Kiara McLeod gave Husson a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice flyout the following inning, while sophomore Olivia McCarty pushed the advantage to 4-2 with an RBI groundout in the fifth.
Dore followed up McCarty's RBI with a two RBI single later in the inning to give the Eagles a 6-2 edge.
After scoring two early unearned runs, Farmington would be limited to just three hits over seven innings as three-time NAC Pitcher of the Year and graduate student Jen Jones dominated in the circle, striking out eight batters.
Dore finished with her second two-hit performance of the afternoon in game two while sophomore Jess Pomerleau tallied two runs.
With rain in the forecast for Tuesday that Eagles have shifted their upcoming series against University of Maine-Presque Isle to Monday beginning at 3 p.m.
