Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. — The Husson University softball team knocked off No. 24 Trine University 2-1 in extra innings on Saturday, before dropping its evening finale to Bridgewater State University 6-3.
Senior Meagan Gosselin played the hero in Wednesday's win over Trine driving in the tying and game-winning runs in the bottom off the eighth inning on a single to left center.
Husson (3-4) and Trine (0-7) managed to put runners in scoring position several times throughout the opening seven innings on Wednesday, but were unable to push anything across.
Trine managed to score add a run in extra innings due to extra inning rules, but junior McKenna Smith slammed the door shut following the lone run in route to eight strong innings allowing just four hits and striking out nine batters.
The Eagles also took advantage of the extra inning rules getting some speed in sophomore Teagan Blackie on second to begin the inning giving way for senior Whitney Bess you dropped a bunt down the first-base line and managed to use her speed to beat the bunt out for a hit advancing Blackie to third.
Bess would steal second on the following pitch allowing Gosselin to play hero, connecting on a line drive into the left center field gap that plated Blackie and Bess giving Husson's its first win over a ranked opponent in program history.
In the night cap, Bridgewater State (4-3) managed to score several runs early, adding two in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 6-0 advantage on the Eagles.
However, Husson didn't go down without a fight, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh beginning with sophomore Katie Raymond's RBI single, followed by senior Erin Bonenfant's RBI ground out and ending with sophomore Kenzie Dore's RBI triple.
The Eagles return back to field on Thursday when they battle Monmouth College (Ill.) beginning at 3:15 p.m.
