Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Fla. — The Husson University softball team split its doubleheader with Geneva University and No. 23 College of Saint Benedict on Monday beating Geneva 5-1 before falling to Saint Benedict 2-1 in the finale.
Husson (2-3) battled Geneva (1-2) scoreless through the opening two innings before the bats came alive in the bottom of the third innings scoring four runs to take a 4-0 advantage.
Sophomore Kenzie Dore tripled to drive in senior Madelyn Fowler for the first run of the game and freshman Brianne McCabe single scoring Dore to make it 2-0.
Senior Megan Gosselin doubled to score McCabe and later came around to score the fourth run on an RBI ground out from freshman Tatyanna Biamby.
The Eagles an insurance run in the sixth inning on sophomore Katie Raymond's inside-the-park homerun.
Geneva broke the shutout in the seventh with their only run, but Biamby retired the side to earn her first collegiate victory, pitching seven innings allowing just five hits and striking out two.
Fowler finished 2-4 on the game, while Gosselin and Raymond each tallied two hits apiece in the victory.
In the second game of the afternoon Saint Benedict (5-0) benefitted from their own inside-the-park homerun in the third inning to take a 1-0 advantage.
Husson answered with the tying run in the sixth off the bat of Dore that drove in senior Whitney Bess, but Saint Benedict plated the eventual winning run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to earn the 2-1 decision.
Sophomore Teagan Blackie finished 2-3 at the dish for the Eagles while junior McKenna Smith pitched well in the circle, throwing six innings allowing just three hits and striking out seven batters.
Husson will take a much-needed day off before returning to the field on Wednesday to battle No. 24 Trine University at 3 p.m. followed by Bridgewater State University at 5:15 p.m.
