Smith dominates with 12 strikeout shutout in softball's win over Simmons

Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla. — Sophomore Teagan Blackie's RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the six inning was the lone difference in Husson University softball's 1-0 victory over Simmons University on Sunday.

Husson (1-2) benefitted Sunday from seven shutout innings by junior McKenna Smith who scattered six hits and struck out a season-high 12 batters.

Simmons (0-1) would surrender back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the sixth inning as freshmen Brianne McCabe and Mackenzie Wendelken both singled to begin the inning. Senior Whitney Bess would reach on a field error giving way to Blackie who reached on a fielder's choice to plate the winning run.

That would be all the run support Smith would need as she recorded the first out in the seventh on a chopper back to the circle, before getting a pop up for the second out and striking out the final batter of the game swimming.

McCabe finished 2-3 in her collegiate debut including a double, while Bess finished 1-2 with a walk.

Husson returns to action on Monday when it battles Geneve University at 1:15 p.m. followed by College of Saint Benedict at 3:15 p.m.
