Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. — The Husson University softball team dropped its opening day games against Wartburg College and Calvin University by finals of 10-2 and 7-5 respectively.
Husson (0-2) took an early 2-0 advantage in Saturday's season-opener scoring runs in the first and third innings, but Wartburg (10-2) benefitted from three runs in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to take a 4-2 edge before picking up the 10-2 win with six runs in the fifth inning.
Senior Whitney Bess and junior McKenna Smith recorded hits for Husson, while Bess recorded the lone RBI and stole one of the Eagles four bases on the morning.
In Husson second game of the day Calvin (6-4) took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top half of the second, but the Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Calvin would regain the lead 4-3 with a run in the third inning before Husson tallied two runs in the third to take a 5-4 advantage. Plating two runs off senior Madelyn Fowlers single.
However, that lead was short lived as Knights took the lead with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to pick up the 7-5 decision.
Sophomore Kenzie Dore finished 3-4 at the plate for the Eagles, while Smith tallied two hits.
Husson returns to the diamond on Sunday when it battles Simmons University at 1:45 p.m. and Marietta College at 4 p.m.
