Box Score LEESBURG, Fla. - The Husson University softball team had an eventful day enroute to a 5-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran in their only game of action on Thursday at THE Spring Games. The Eagles (4-4) were scheduled to play Monmouth (Ill.) but rain forced that game to be postponed and the Eagles picked up a game versus Vikings (8-5) about four hours after the postponed game.
Most of the Eagles offense took place in the first three innings of the contest as senior Madelyn Fowler got it started in the first inning with a double off the wall to score junior Katie Raymond. In the second inning, sophomore Teagan Blackie hit a grounder to the second baseman which allowed senior Whitney Bess to score as the Eagles doubled their advantage. In the third inning, it was the freshman driving in the runs. Freshman Kiara McLeod drove in her first collegiate run on a single followed by a first collegiate RBI for freshman Mackenzie Wendelken as it was 4-0 after three innings.
The Eagles scored their final run in the fifth as a wild pitch got by the catcher and senior Meagan Gosselin scored her second run of the contest to make it 5-0. The Vikings would respond in the bottom half of the inning as Bailey Erlandson drove in a run but junior McKenna Smith would shut the door down for the 5-1 victory.
Smith earned her third victory of the season after pitching a complete game and only allowing one run on seven hits. She also struck out ten of the 29 batters faced.
The Eagles will close out the spring break trip with a doubleheader on Friday in Clermont, Florida at the Legends Way Complex. The first game will be versus Emmanuel College (Mass.) at 9:15 p.m. and the second game against UMass Dartmouth with that contest starting at 12:15 p.m.
