Box Score BANGOR, Maine - In the 103rd minute, Florian Gasser lifted a corner kick into the box and Pedro Molina from right outside the six yard box heads it into the bottom right corner to earn the Husson Eagles men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over 10-men Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday night at Boucher Field. With the victory, the Eagles stay unbeaten at 2-0-1 while the Lions suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1-0.
There was no score after the first half as each team had a single shot on goal. The field started to shift Husson's way in the 55th minute as Igor Chignolli was sent off for a second bookable offense and the Eagles went up a man for the rest of the game. As the Eagles were getting adjusted to being up a man; the Lions had two chances back-to-back but Ben Powell was there for both of them to keep the game scoreless.
In the 65th minute the Eagles took over the chances as Jordi Cabau played a through ball to the right post but Gasser wasn't able to deflect the ball home. In the 68th minute the Eagles found the breakthrough. Cabau received the ball inside the left side of box and took a couple touches to get past his man before delivering a short cross to the streaking Mario Alvarez and smashed the half-volley into the net for his second goal in two games.
Despite the efforts to put the game to bed; the Lions stood strong and found an equalizer in the 85th minute. A long ball by Tyler Ferreira gets past the Eagle defense and Leon Zaffonato gets on the end of it and sneaks a shot past Powell to send the game into overtime.
In the first extra time it was the Lions who had the best chance as a header from Michael Frotscher was gloved away by Powell and a second period of extra time was needed.
It was the very first chance of the final ten minutes when the Eagles earned the corner and Gasser was able to find Molina and give the Eagles the extra time victory.
After the game Head Coach Gavin Penny had this to say, "I could not be anymore proud of this group of lads. We stuck to our game and were patient with the ball. Eventually it paid of for us. We worked extremely hard both with and without the ball, and continued to create chances. Credit to Eastern Nazarene, they are a great team and put in a big effort. But I thought we were tremendous tonight, the lads put in a proper professional display. We'll get back to work tomorrow to prepare our bodies for our first league outing on Saturday."
Next up for the lads is their first league outing as UMaine-Farmington visits Boucher Field on Saturday, September 11th at 3:30 p.m.
