Box Score BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University's men's soccer team came from a goal down to defeat UMaine-Farmington, 2-1, in the Eagles' North Atlantic Conference East Divisional opener on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field.
In the 14th minute, the Beavers were awarded a penalty kick when an Eagle stumbled inside the box and brought down a Beaver with him. James Pelleiter stepped up and slotted a shot into the bottom left corner to give the Beavers an early lead.
The Eagles would equalize less than ten minutes later when a free kick taken by Mario Alvarez was delivered to the head of Cabau and his header would be saved only to be followed up by a Cabau's volley that would zoom by Jonah Sautter.
In the 31st minute, the Eagles were awarded a penalty of their own. Jordi Cabau with his back turned towards the goal, and was tripped up by a Beaver inside the box and Alverez drove home his third goal in three games to make it 2-1 Husson.
The Eagles had nine shots in the second half with three on target in trying to score an insurance goal but the Eagles were denied the goal but earned the victory.
Eagles' head coach Gavin Penny had this to say after the victory: "We didn't have our best performance today. There were some moments early in the game that were out of our control which changed the way we played. I thought we were quite good in the first half and certainly think we were deserving of our goals, and unfortunate not to get a couple more. UMF did a great job in the second half of preventing us doing what we like to do. It made the game very difficult and scrappy but in the end we got the 3 points which is the most important thing. We learnt a thing or two today and will look to teach the lads how to fix it. Can't complain about a win though, we were still the better side and deserved the win in the end."
The men's soccer team will travel on Tuesday, September 14th for the first time this season when they visit Pickard Men's Soccer Field to take on the Polar Bears of Bowdoin for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
