BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening at John P. Boucher Field.
The result marks the fourth-consecutive draw between the two programs, in addition to six of the last seven meetings having ended in a deadlock. Additionally, Husson is unbeaten in its last 11 matchups with Southern Maine.
The Eagles (0-0-1) and Huskies (0-0-1) battled through 90 scoreless minutes, with both teams creating opportunities but neither able to find the back of the net. Husson finished the contest with six shots, including three on goal, while Southern Maine recorded eight shots and three shots on target.
Husson sophomore goalkeeper Liam Mason turned in a strong performance in net, making three saves while recording the shutout. Southern Maine goalkeeper Owen Burns also made three saves.
The Huskies generated the first significant pressure of the evening, with Cole Johnson putting an early shot off the left post in the fifth minute. Southern Maine continued to threaten with a pair of corner kicks shortly afterward, but Mason and the Husson defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard.
The Eagles settled in as the half progressed. Freshman Santiago Jimenez recorded Husson's first shot on target in the 22nd minute, but his attempt was saved by Burns. Sophomore Cesar Soucre later fired a shot over the goal in the 37th minute as Husson continued to search for the opening goal.
Neither team could break through before halftime, sending the game to the intermission tied at 0-0.
Husson came out aggressively in the second half, earning a corner kick less than two minutes after the restart. Soucre tested Burns again in the 49th minute, but the Southern Maine goalkeeper made the save. Sophomore Lucas Alabiso followed with a shot wide of the goal shortly afterward.
The Eagles continued to apply pressure as the half progressed. Alabiso recorded another shot in the 59th minute, while Husson earned two more corner kicks during a stretch of sustained possession in the final 15 minutes.
With the game entering its final minutes, Husson continued to push for the game-winning goal. Sophomore Jorge Mora put a shot on target in the 87th minute, but Burns made the save to preserve the scoreless tie. Neither side could generate a final breakthrough, and the contest ended 0-0.
Husson finished the evening with six shots, three shots on goal and four corner kicks.
The Eagles will return home on Friday for a matchup with the University of Maine at Fort Kent at 4:30 p.m.
