BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University men's soccer team battled back late but was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to the University of Maine at Fort Kent, 3-1, on Friday evening at John P. Boucher Field.
The Eagles (0-1-1) fell behind early when Fort Kent's (4-0-2) Rohane Brown found the back of the net in the sixth minute, with Michael German providing the assist. Husson looked to answer, earning a corner kick in the 11th minute before sophomore Miguel Diaz Alvarez tested Fort Kent goalkeeper Boliver Owusu in the 17th minute, but the shot was saved.
Fort Kent doubled its advantage in the 21st minute when Javel Clarke scored to make it a 2-0 contest. Husson continued to generate opportunities, with sophomore Jorge Mora putting a shot on goal in the 35th minute and Diaz Alvarez forcing another save from Owusu in the 39th minute. The Eagles also earned another corner kick late in the half, but entered halftime trailing 2-0.
Fort Kent extended its lead early in the second half when German converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute to make it a 3-0 game.
Husson continued to battle throughout the second half. Sophomore Tighe Hrabchak recorded a shot in the 59th minute, while freshman Santiago Jimenez, who entered the match in the 63rd minute, put a shot wide in the 73rd minute.
The Eagles created additional pressure late, earning consecutive corner kicks in the 81st minute. Freshman Carlos Davila followed with a shot in the 88th minute that went high, and Husson earned another corner kick just moments later.
With time winding down, Jimenez broke through in the 90th minute, scoring his first goal of his career to put the Eagles on the board. Husson was unable to find a second goal before the final whistle, however, as Fort Kent secured the 3-1 victory.
Husson finished the contest with seven shots and six corner kicks, while sophomore Liam Mason made one save in goal. Jimenez led the Eagles with one goal and two shots, while Diaz Alvarez recorded two shots.
The Eagles return to action on Sept. 12 when they host No. 7 Wheaton College at 11:30 a.m.
