BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University men's soccer team carried a one-goal advantage into halftime, but a pair of second-half goals from No. 7 Wheaton College proved to be the difference as the Eagles fell 2-1 on Saturday at John P. Boucher Field.
Husson (0-2-1) struck first in the 42nd minute when freshman Ludovico Barosi scored his first goal of the season. Junior Tibo Desorme picked up the assist on the goal, which came at the 41:53 mark and sent the Eagles into halftime holding a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles created a pair of chances before breaking through. Sophomore Cesar Soucre sent an attempt wide in the 24th minute before sophomore Miguel Diaz Alvarez put a shot on frame at 27:43 that was stopped by Wheaton goalkeeper Ty Nolon. Husson earned a corner following the Diaz Alvarez opportunity and later capitalized on Barosi's chance late in the half.
Wheaton (2-0-2) responded quickly following halftime. Charlie Cushing pulled the Lyons even at 49:40, scoring an unassisted goal to make it 1-1. Cushing struck again less than 10 minutes later, scoring at 59:41 off an assist from Colin Dickinson to give Wheaton a 2-1 advantage.
The Lyons applied significant pressure during the second half after being limited to just two shots over the opening 45 minutes. Husson senior goalkeeper Garret Jordan helped keep the Eagles within striking distance, making all six of his saves after halftime. Wheaton finished the contest with 16 shots, including 14 in the second half, while putting eight attempts on goal.
Jordan came up with another stop in the 79th minute, denying Avery Dinham's attempt toward the bottom-right corner to keep the deficit at one. Husson continued searching for an equalizer over the closing minutes, but Wheaton protected its advantage through the final whistle.
Wheaton finished with a 16-6 advantage in total shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. The Lyons also held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Jordan played all 90 minutes in goal for Husson, recording six saves.
Barosi accounted for Husson's goal on his lone shot of the match, while Desorme recorded the assist. Diaz Alvarez registered the Eagles' other shot on goal.
The Eagles will look to get in the win column for the first time on the young season on Tuesday when they head to Bates College for a 7 p.m. matchup.
