Box Score BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University softball team defeated Endicott College, 12-4 (6 inn.), on Friday morning in game one of the NCAA Division III Bangor, Maine Regional Tournament at O'Keefe Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a scoreless top half of the first inning, Husson (28-1) scored nine times off five hits and three errors in the bottom half of the inning. Sydney Ames led off the inning with an infield single then advanced to second on Whitney Bess' fielder's choice. With two runners on, Kenzie Dore reached first on a Gull miscue to load the bases before Ames and Bess crossed the plate with the Eagles' first two runs of the game off another Endicott (19-3) miscue. The Gulls intentional walked Olivia McCarty trying to setup a double play to get out of the inning after Jen Jones reached base on the previous Gull miscue, but Madelyn Fowler had other plans as she ripped an one-out two RBI single to centerfield driving home Dore and Jones to chase the Gulls' starting pitcher Michaela Hamill from the game.
The Eagles continued to attack after the pitching change as Katie Raymond singled down the left field line to reload the bases before Katie Windsor reached base on a fielder's choice that produced the second out of the inning. With two-outs, Ames hit an infield single back to the pitcher that brought home Fowler with the Eagles' fifth run of the inning. Bess was issued a free pass that forced in Raymond pushing the Husson lead to 6-0. A two-out two RBI single up the middle by Dore and another Gull miscue allowed Bess, Ames and Windsor to score the Eagles' seventh, eighth and ninth runs of the inning. The inning came to an end when Morgan Coleman popped out to the pitcher.
The Gulls got three back in the second on a sacrifice fly by Katie Terban and a double to left field by Keelin Spencer before tacking on their fourth run of the game in the sixth off a RBI single to right field by Spencer.
Husson used three runs in the sixth inning to finish off the game in six innings. Coleman reached on fielder's choice and with the help of another Gull miscue allowed Ames and Windsor to score. Pinch-runner Teagan Blackie would score as Jones smashed a single to centerfield to help the Eagles capitalize on a 12-4 victory in game one.
