Olsen Leads the Charge in 19-14 Win over Beavers

BANGOR, Maine - In a high-scoring North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's lacrosse competition on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field, the Husson University Eagles (1-1) came out on top, outscoring the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers (1-1) by the final score of 19-14.

IN THE ACTION:

Taking clear control of the opening minute of the game, Husson game on fast and hard, putting up two goals from Maddy Olsen and Riana Winslow within 15 seconds of each other. The Beavers responded swiftly and confidently, tacking on three tallies from three different players over the course of the next five minutes. Evening the score, 3-3, with 24:04 left to play in the half, Ashley Cummings circled behind the goal and attacked the crease for a low shot into the back of the net. UMaine-Farmington once again responded with a trio of goals to recapture a 6-3 advantage. 

The Eagles battled back within a goal, 6-5, at the halfway mark of the period thanks to back-to-back goals and determination from Olsen. Ten minutes lanter, and Sophia Gomez would help put the Eagles back on top, 9-8. Four consecutive successful shots from Husson helped solidify an 11-9 edge heading into the break. 

Olsen and Cushing broke open the floodgates for the Eagles in the second half, racking up five goals between the two of them in the opening seven minutes to give the Green and Gold a 16-11 lead. With just under five minutes left in the game, Olsen became the first player ever in HU program history to score 11 points in a single game as she snuck in a free position goal. The Beavers added on one more tally in the final minute and a half From Jade Petrie before closing out the game with a Husson win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Maddy Olsen led all scorers with a career-high eight goals on just nine shots on goal, while also dishing three assists.

  • Ashley Cummings added on two goals and five assists in the win. 

  • For the Beavers, Kayla Backman led the attack with four goals and one assist, while picking up seven ground balls.

UP NEXT!

The Eagles host their final home game of the abbreviated season against the Thomas College (Maine) Terriers on Saturday, April 10th. The conference game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
