Connor-Schade's Free Position Goal in Overtime Lifts Husson Women's Lacrosse, 13-12, Over UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine - In a thrilling, 13-12, overtime match at the University of Maine-Farmington, the Husson Univesity women's lacrosse team capitalized on a golden goal opportunity with a free position goal by Sierra Connor-Schade less than a minute into sudden death, to help secure a 3-1 record in the North Atlantic Conference to lead all teams in the NAC East Division this season. 

IN THE ACTION

After swapping the lead twice in the opening half and trailing by one, 6-5, headed into the break, Husson opened up the second half with an unassisted goal from Sophia Gomez to tie the game at 6-6. The Beavers continued to respond with a tie-breaking point within minutes of the Eagles evening the score. Husson tied the game four times throughout the opening 13 minutes of play in the second period thanks to a pair of goals from both Maddy Olsen and Gomez, 9-9, before broke away with an unassisted shot and score to give the Green and Gold their first lead of the game in the half. A quick tally just forty seconds later by UMF's Emma Brown, her third finish of the day, brought the score back to a 10-10 stalemate. 

Seven minutes later and Kristina Moody took advantage of an open shot from Jade Petrie to push the Beavers back ahead, 11-10, with under 10 mintes left to play. Ashley Cummings found the back of the net for her second time today before Moody once again attacked the net and scored, leaving the score 12-11 with 6:58 on the clock. Minutes ticked away as Beaver goalie Lydia Wasina made a stop on a free position shot by Gomez, followed by a Beaver shot off the post seeing Mallory Burchill jump into action with a swift ground ball recovery in the crease. With less than three minutes left in regulation, Mary Cushing attacked the net, firing a shot that snuck past the Beaver goalie to tie up the game, 12-12. Two more saves from both goalies led to the a 12-12 stalemate as time ran out, leading to overtime. 

A free position attempt less than 40 seconds into extra minutes led to a golden goal by Connor-Schade to help push the Eagles into a 13-12 victory over the Terriers in the final game of the regular season for both teams. 

BETWEEN THE PIPES

Mallory Burchill made 15 crucial saves for her third win of the season in net for the Eagles while the Beaver's goalie, Lydia Wasina, stopped 12 shots on the opposing end of the field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Maddy Olsen once again led the Eagles offensively with four goals on five shots on goal, and won eight draw controls.
  • Picking up the game-winner, Sierra Connor-Schade tallied three goals on the afternoon in four shots. 
  • Ashley Cummings added on two goals and three helpers to the mix for the Eagles.
  • Emma Brown, Kaya Backman, Kristina Moody, Isabella Monbouquette all notched a hat trick on the day for the Beavers.

The Husson women's lacrosse team finished out the regular season 3-1 in conference play as they await the seeding announcement by the NAC for postseason play.
