Husson Softball Splits with UMPI in Saturday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University softball team (7-1) split a pair of games with the University of Maine-Presque Isle (1-3) at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex on Saturday, winning game one, 4-2, and dropping game two, 2-1

GAME ONE: Husson 4, UMPI 2

Even though the game was at Husson, the Eagles played as the visitor, and managed to get a run in the top of the first. Sydney Ames led off with a base hit to left, stole second, and moved to third on a Kenzie Dore deep flyout to right. Ames tagged home on Morgan Coleman's RBI single to left.

Husson tacked on two additional runs in the second inning to stretch their lead. Madelyn Fowler's deep fly ball to center led her sprinting all the way to third. She scored on Erin Bonenfant's grounder to short, while Bonenfant reached safely at first on the errant throw. Singles by Katie Raymond and Katie Windsor loaded the bases for Sydney Ames, and her bloop single to right scored Bonenfant to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. With the bases still loaded and no outs, Husson had a chance to send in more runs, but UMPI pitcher Abby Hooper managed to retire the side and get out of the jam.

The Owls finally got on the scoreboard in the third on Melanee Terry's RBI double to the gap in right center field, cutting the Eagles lead to 3-1 after three innings.

In the fifth, Jones, Fowler and Bonenfant all singled for Husson to lead off the inning, loading the bases with no outs for the second time in the game. Katie Windsor brought in a run with a single to right, but the Eagles were unable to take further advantage, and settled for a 4-1 lead.

The Owls put another run on the board with a two-out, RBI triple by Dalaney Anfinson to bring the Owls within two runs, 4-2, through six innings, but that would be all the scoring for UMPI in game one, as the Eagles held on for the win.

GAME TWO: UMPI 2, Husson 1

After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Kenzie Dore singled through the right side and took second when Morgan Coleman was hit by a pitch. Dore advanced to third on Jen Jones' fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch.

UMPI answered in the bottom of the inning. Halle Garner reached with a leadoff walk, and came all the way around to score on an RBI double to the gap in left center by Anaiz Diaz, tying the score at 1-1 after three.

In the bottom of the sixth, UMPI got the go-ahead run when Delanie Strout ripped a one-out triple down the third base line, and scored as she beat the throw home on Melanee Terry's grounder to second. That gave the Owls a 2-1 lead heading to the seventh.

UMPI was able to hold off the Eagles in the top of the seventh to pick up their first win of the season.
