Box Score 2 STANDISH, Maine - The Husson University softball team (4-0) closed out their opening weekend, completing the home-and-home sweep of Saint Joseph's (Maine) (0-4) on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: Husson 5, Saint Joseph's (Maine) 4
In their second double header against the Monks this weekend, the Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game one. Katie Windsor was the first to cross the plate, after a single placed her on the base path. Maddy Fowler would reach on a base hit to load the bases, advancing Morgan Coleman and Jen Jones. Monks pitcher Meredith Pearce then dealt a walk to Olivia McCarty, scoring Coleman, as Husson tallied two runs in the inning.
Meranda Martin opened the bottom half of the first inning with a walk for the Monks, advancing to second on a stolen base. Hannah Gower crushed a double to put two runners in scoring position for the home team. Despite turning a double play, the Eagles surrendered a run to St. Joe's before Jones caught Bailey Rassol swinging to end the inning.
The Eagles took their 2-1 lead into the top of the 4th inning, when Whitney Bess and Sydney Ames were both handed walks. Windsor reached on a fielder's choice that scored Bess to extend the Green and Gold's advantage, 3-1. In the bottom of the inning, the Monks would cut the lead to one, as Haley Brann crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Grace Chadbourn.
Kenzie Dore picked up two RBI's in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Ames and Katie Raymond, extending Husson's lead 5-2. St. Joe's would add runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, scoring runners on passed balls to come within one run, but were unable to tie the game as the Eagles would take game one of the day, 5-4.

Jones (2-0) picked up her second win of the season, striking out nine batters while giving up six hits and two earned runs in six innings of work.

Meredith Pence went the distance for the Monks, allowing eight hits and three earned runs, while striking out three.

GAME TWO: Husson 8, Saint Joseph's (Maine) 4
The Eagles continued their dominance in the first inning, scoring runs in the top half of the frame. Sydney Ames singled to start the inning, advancing to third on a double by Katie Windsor. Kenzie Dore grounded out to the shortstop in the next at bat, picking up an RBI as Ames was able to cross the plate on the play. Ripping a single to score Windsor, Morgan Coleman gave the visitors an early 2-0 lead over the Monks.
St. Joe's picked up their first run in the bottom of the first inning, as Lydia Howarth grounded out to Ames on the mound, scoring Meranda Martin. The Monks would continue their offensive run in the bottom of the second, taking their first lead of the home-and-home series, 4-2.
Husson's Ames reached base to open the top half of the third inning, advancing to second on a missed throw by the Monks. Windsor struck a base-hit to advance Ames to third, before stealing second for herself. Despite grounding out to Sydney Hatch, Coleman recorded an RBI, scoring Ames on the play. Jen Jones would tie the game at four as her single sent Windsor across the plate.
The 4-4 stalemate would hold until the top of the sixth inning, when Maddy Fowler's single drove home Jones and Jessica Pomerleau, pushing the Eagles ahead by two runs. Ames would extend their lead to three, crossing the plate on a passed ball in the top of the seventh inning. Fowler's second RBI of the afternoon sealed the victory for the Eagles, who completed the weekend sweep of St. Joe's, 8-4.
