Husson Softball Opens up the 2020 Season in Florida at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Husson Eagles (0-2) dropped their first pair of games of the season on a breezy evening in Florida, to Johnson & Wales University (3-5) and Wheaton College (Mass.) (2-0). 

 

GAME ONE: Johnson & Wales 9, Husson 0

The Wildcats struck first, scoring two runs in the third inning.  Devin Scales knocked the first run in by way of an RBI flyout, with a Jenna Conroy double driving in the second.  Scales would add a three-run homer to her resume in the fifth inning to make the score 5-0.

JWU kept at it, adding four runs in the seventh inning to wrap up the 9-0 shutout win.

The Eagles would strand six runners on base in the contest, scattering three hits and two walks across the bases throughout the seven-inning contest.  Gorey led the way with two base hits.  Lead-off hitter Bri Brochu had a single of her own.  

HUSSON HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Chloe Gorey got her season started in a big way, going 2-3 at the plate.
  • Jen Jones showed good plate discipline, working two walks while adding six K's from within the circle.
  • Madelyn Fowler turned on the jets and stole second base in the sixth inning.

JOHNSON & WALES HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Devin Scales drove in three runs and hit a homer, finishing her day 2-4 at the plate.
  • Kaelani Gamble had three hits and scored two runs for the Wildcats.
  • Kristin Frost pitched a complete game, allowing three hits with 10 strikeouts and tallied three RBI.  

 

GAME TWO: Wheaton 6, Husson 3

The Lyons grabbed ahold of a strong 5-0 lead after two innings, thanks to the top of the lineup.   Katelyn Barton singled up the middle to drive in the first run of the contest, and came around to score on a wild pitch.  Julia McLintock launched the ball deep into centerfield, driving in two, while scoring herself on an error. 

Lindsay Whittles directed a single through the right side of the infield, allowing Allicyn Cole to score.  With the game now a 6-0 affair, the Eagles started swinging the bats as they started to rally.

Katie Windsor put a two on the board for Husson, singling in a pair of runs as she made her way to third base on the throw. A Mikayla Tripp ground out, sent Windsor in to score, but the game would end with a final score of 6-3.

 
HUSSON HIGHLIGHTS:

WHEATON HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Julia McLintock tripled, driving in two teammates and scoring a run.
  • Allicyn Cole worked two walks and scored twice.
  • Lindsay Whittles reached base on all four of her plate appearances, walking twice and picking up two hits.

UP NEXT!

The Husson Eagles are back in action for another doubleheader tomorrow at Legends Way Ballfields.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:45 PM against Lesley University.  The second game is scheduled for 4:15 PM, against #25 Manhattanville College.
