Eagles Fall Short in their Season Opener to the Monks, 9-7

STANDISH, Maine – Husson University women's lacrosse (0-1) opened up their 2020 season with a non-conference match-up against Saint Joseph's College of Maine (1-0).  The Eagles lost in a back-and-forth game with the Monks, seeing a final score of 9-7. 

IN THE ACTION:

Husson's Mary Cushing was first on the board with a goal just 2:47 seconds into the game.  Maddy Olsen soon followed with a free position goal to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.  Saint Joseph's would answer with a goal by Logan Champlin to make it a 2-1 game barely two minutes later.  After a ten-minute scoring pause, Champlin hit the back of the net again with 11:47 left in the first half to even the score, 2-2.  Olsen quickly responded with her second goal of the evening, assisted by first-year Cammie Osborne for her first collegiate point, to help recapture a 3-2 advantage.  

The Monks would respond with one more goal in the half from Josie Ring to level the score with 6:15 left until the break, 3-3.  Before the final whistle to mark intermission, Olsen registered a hat trick with her third goal of the as teammate Ashley Cummings followed up with another tally to bring the score to 5-3 at the break.

Husson's Sophia Gomez helped extend their advantage to three as she opened the second half with her first collegiate goal, 6-3.  Just seconds later, Saint Joseph's Maddy Beaulieu cut the Eagle lead to two, sparking a strong offensive surge as the Monks scored five unanswered goals over the next 13 minutes to take their first lead of the game, 8-6. 

With 13:29 remaining, Gomez added her second tally of the evening to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, but the Monks tacked on one more with less than nine-minute left to play and stood strong on defense guarding their net to a 9-7 win.  

HUSSON LEADERS:

  • Maddy Olsen led the Eagles with a hat trick, one assist, and two caused turnovers.
  • Sophia Gomez scored her first two collegiate goals.
  • Rose Davies grabbed five ground balls and caused three Monk turnovers.
  • Mallory Burchill posted 11 saves on 31 shots faced.

SAINT JOSEPH'S LEADERS:

  • Logan Champlin led the charge for the Monks with three goals, two assists, five ground balls, and five caused turnovers.
  • Maddy Beaulieu registered two goals and three assists for the Monks.
  • Alexandra Belaire scooped up six ground balls and caused three Eagle turnovers.
  • In net for the Monks, Madelyn Nelson made six saves on 18 shots.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held the lead in shots (31-18) and ground balls (30-21), while the Eagles led in draw controls (10-8).

The Eagles will travel to Hilton Head, S.C. to take on the SUNY Potsdam Bears on Tuesday, March 10th at 9:30 a.m.
