Softball Earns Second Seed in 2019 NAC Championship Tournament with Sweep of UMF, 2-1 & 9-3

BANGOR, Maine – Husson University (21-9, 11-1 NAC) swept a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) softball doubleheader versus University of Maine at Farmington (14-17, 6-6 NAC) on Monday afternoon at O'Keefe Field. The Eagles took the opener, 2-1, and completed the sweep with a 9-3 triumph.

GAME ONE – HUSSON 2, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 1:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

UMaine-Farmington took a 1-0 lead with a run off two hits and two HU errors in the top of the third, when Broghan Gagnon reached first on an Eagle throwing error and later scored on an Eagle infield miscue.

The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Kylie Cunningham singled up the middle, advanced to second on an Arika Brochu groundout and scored on a single through the left side off the bat of Whitney Bess. One batter later, Bess scored to lift her team to a 2-1 lead after Bri Brochu reached base on a Beaver outfield miscue, to cap the game scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE:

Jen Jones (9-5) allowed an unearned run off five hits with ten strikeouts in a complete-game victory.

UMaine-Farmington's starter Kailyn Hill (4-11) yielded two runs (one earned) off six hits with four K's over six frames.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Jones was 2-3 on the day.
  • Bess went 1-3 with a run and an RBI.
  • Cunningham finished 1-3 with a run scored.
  • Chloe Gorey and Olivia Smith both went 1-3 on the afternoon.

OFF THE BAT - UMAINE-FARMINGTON:

  • Makayla Wilson and Leah Stevens added one hit in four at-bats.
  • Kayleigh Oberg, Callie Hammer and Karen Flaherty all went 1-3 on the day.

GAME TWO – HUSSON 2, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 1:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Eagles kicked off the nightcap by plating four runs off four hits in the bottom of the first, as Gorey singled home B. Brochu and promptly scored when Tamara Aunchman singled to left field. Smith, who reached first on a Beaver miscue prior to Aunchman's single, scored on a single by Jones to push Husson's lead to three before Aunchman crossed the plate on a Kylie Kennedy fielder's choice.

UMaine-Farmington got on the board in the top of second when Gagnon doubled to left center, sending home Oberg with the Beavers first run of the game.

In the bottom of the third, Bess singled home a pair to extend the Eagle lead to five, 6-1, before Oberg ripped a two-run double in the top of sixth to cut the Eagle lead in half, 6-3.

Husson proceeded to take a 9-3 lead with three runs off four hits and a UMaine-Farmington miscue. Gorey singled through the left side and scored when Jones reached on an error, who later sprinted home with Aunchman on a two-out two RBI single by Bess to close out the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE:

A. Brochu (8-2) allowed three earned runs off five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in a complete-game victory.

UMaine-Farmington's starter Brianna McGrath (10-6) yielded nine runs (five earned) off 16 hits with five punch outs in six innings.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Aunchman went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Cunningham was 3-4 with a run scored.
  • Bess finished 2-4 with four RBI.
  • Jones had a 2-4 day with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • A. Brochu recorded a 3-4 day with a double.

OFF THE BAT - UMAINE-FARMINGTON:

  • Alyssa Dillan went 2-3 with a run scored.
  • Oberg was 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.
  • Gagnon finished game two with a 1-3 day with an RBI and a double.

UP NEXT:

Husson returns to the diamond this Friday when the second seeded Eagles face the third seeded Owls of the University of Maine at Presque Isle in game two of the 2019 NAC Softball Championship Tournament, hosted by Thomas College. All start times are to be determined and are subject to change.
