Women's Lacrosse Drops Regular Season Finale to Maine Maritime, 12-6

CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy (5-6, 3-2 NAC) defeated Husson University (7-6, 3-2 NAC), 12-6, in what was the 2019 regular season final for both teams in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's lacrosse action at Ritchie Field on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Husson struck first with a Mary Cushing goal 4:29 into the first half, but Maine Maritime responded with four unanswered strikes by Sierra James, Sydney Adams, Julia Dillon and Madison Savary before Cali Newton scored two goals off nice assists from Ashley Cummings and Maddy Olsen to cut the Mariners lead to one with 10:41 remaining in the half. The Mariners tallied three strikes in closing minutes of the half and held a 7-3 lead heading into the intermission.

Goals from Olsen and Rose Davies offset James and Adams tallies in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza to help the hosts make it a four-goal (9-5) game with 24:31 remaining. But the Mariners were able to stay a step ahead, as MMA received goals from Olivia Le Blanc and Madison Barry that sandwiched a Riana Winslow goal before Adams put the game out of reach at the 1:46 mark.  

THE KEEPERS:

  • Husson's Mallory Burchill made 17 saves in the setback.
  • Sydney Cole stopped eight shots in the winning effort for Maine Maritime.

LEADERS – HUSSON:

  • Newton netted two goals with an assist, two ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Cushing tallied one goal, one ground ball, and three draw controls.
  • Davies registered a goal and a pair of ground balls.
  • Winslow contributed a goal with a ground ball, a draw control and a caused turnover.
  • Olsen added a goal, an assist, four ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
  • Cummings chipped in with an assist, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

LEADERS – MMA:

  • Adams scored four goals with five ground balls, six draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
  • James netted three goals while dishing out one helper with four ground balls and five caused turnovers.
  • Christina Wilson chipped in with a goal, an assist, six ground balls, three draw controls and five caused turnovers.
  • Savary contributed a goal and a pair of helpers with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Barry had a goal with two ground balls, a draw control, and two caused turnovers.
  • Le Blanc registered a goal and a pair of assists with four ground balls and one caused turnovers.
  • Dillon added a goal, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

TEAM STATS:

Maine Maritime held the lead in shots (33-21) and ground balls (42-32) while both teams corralled ten draw controls on the afternoon.
